The closest to home made ajvar. Yummy!
I love ajvar but it's A LOT of work to make. So I've been shopping for years for something that replicates my homemade recipe of about equal parts:eggplantroasted red peppertomato --> made into pasteonionAll ajvars look the same from the outside, but the ingredients vary. In particular, many brands replace the more expensive roasted red pepper with carrots, add sugar, water, or do other unsavory things. So when I finally opened this brand and I saw that they didn't cheat on the ingredients and on the roasting, I made a note to always buy this brand and I've been satisfied for years. If you don't know how to serve it, it's a dip and it can be served with other dips, and it's really delicious on bread with hummus and capers, and sometimes paired with certain veggie sausages. Or put on hot polenta. It's different from harissa but it can be used in places harissa is used.

I miss Serbian food, and this was my all time favorite, so glad to be able to easily order it online.

Arrived partially open
The jar arrived and it was leaking a little bit. I noticed the lid was unscrewed a bit already and came off way too easy. No packaging was damaged and my other jars of Ajvar (different brands) had no issues. It may just be too easy to open? Wish I could’ve tried it but I’m not taking the risk with my family with all the crazy people licking food products and all.

The real deal
I lived in the Balkans for a couple years and had the pleasure of trying a lot of different brands of Ajvar, and similar spreads such as Lutenica in Bulgaria and Zacusca in Romania. Of all the brands I've tried, Bas is hands down the best. This was further confirmed when a few of my Macedonian friends admitted that Bas is better than their grandmother's ajvar. Also, I would not say this is hot. It's as spicy as a typical mild salsa.
