Exceptional!
Very well-written and of great value, this book has caused a shift in my perspective of loving and serving Jesus. I have a deeper desire to abide in His presence and know Him more intimately and follow Him more closely. I will be referring back to many passages in this book, but more than that, dig deeper in God's Word and trust Him more.

Wow! Following GOD CLOSELY!
What a book bargain. This is a story of one person's life who followed God to the best of his ability. There is truly something for every person in this book. This is a witness of a time to live and a time to die, a time to rejoice and the time to Navigate pain. An example of walking with God on the bleeding edge. In Hope of this changing me to follow God closer.

Required Reading
This book about one of the modern heroes of the Christian faith should probably be unofficial required reading for all Christians. Before I read it, I had heard about Hudson Taylor many times but had never taken the time to read about the man and his mission. This book was penned by his son and daughter-in-law in 1932, and the literary language of the times is quite evident throughout the book. Many direct quotes by Mr. Taylor himself were included which had even more quaintly archaic language, which is why I gave the book four rather than five stars. At times I had to push myself to get past the distinctly old-fashioned literary style, but having read mostly from the KJV Bible, I was helped in that regard. I did find myself at times longing for a more contemporary writing style, but the story was so strong and compelling I found myself turning the pages nonetheless. I think any attempt to "modernize" this particular account (the first I've read of the many available on Hudson Taylor and the CIM) would actually detract from its sense of immediacy, of being very close to Hudson Taylor himself. I recommend the book to any Christian who wants to learn about the remarkable faith of a deservedly famous historical missionary, as told by his son and containing many personal quotes by Hudson Taylor himself. I read this book first as recommended by Warren W. Wiersbe in his book, Living With the Giants.

Better than I thought it would be
I expected to read an historical account of a great missionary. However, this account was greatly enhanced by many quotes from journals and letters written by Hudson Taylor and those around him. The author did not sugarcoat the missionary or Christian life, but spoke much of his struggles along the way both physical and emotional, and how he dealt with them. It was fascinating to read about his total dependence on God for all things, such as how he grew an amazing missionary organization, but never asked anyone else but God to cover his financial needs.I found the book much more engaging than I had expected. As I finished each chapter I was anxious to get to the next one.It was refreshing to read about Mr. Taylor's extraordinary calling and service without the authors throwing in guilt to you and I for not doing an equal task. I found it very inspirational and encouraging, especially for those who are involved in ministry.

To fully appreciate the cost of "true" Christian discipleship, I invite you to discover "gold" with Hudson Taylor's life....
I, as an American Christian, personally believe that the fire of true faith that burns ever so brightly even today in mainland China has been stoked mightily by one man, who truly understood what it meant to deny self and follow Jesus! Hudson Taylor was his name. This audiobook may be considered a "plumbline" [Isaiah 28:16-17 NIV] for living out the call to follow Jesus and to spead the gospel. One must understand that suffering and deprivation (as was quite common in Hudson Taylor's life as a missionary to China) are essential elements of "Christian discipleship." However, the rewards on this side of the grave and in eternity are more than worth the pain in my opinion, and what a glorious journey Hudson Taylor endure in his calling to spread the gospel to China. After sharing my audiobook with a fellow church member, who is a native of Swaziland, she commented that the only thing that really broke her heart was that Hudson Taylor had made the decision to leave his children with a loving caregiver (after their mother died) and return to China to finish his work. Yet, what has The LORD instructed us as to the specifications of "true discipleship"? [Matthew 10:37 NIV] “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me....In regions of the world where fellow-believers have not experienced persecution for "the faith," we simply do not understand how compelling our allegiance must absolutely be in order to serve, The Christ, The Son of the Living God. [Matthew 16:16 NKJV]...but we must as the hour draws near....Maranatha!!
