DMT D8C Dia-Sharp Diamond Knife Sharpener, Coarse Diamond Sharpening Stone, 8-Inch

I own 4 DMT diamond stones. Unfortunately, everyone I have bought before this one has defects. I am happy with this stone though. My extra coarse stone is missing diamond coverage all along the edges and has a big blotch missing in one of the corners. My DMT fine stone has extremely bad grit contamination that you can not only feel, but can hear, when sharpening. So, I was happy when I finally got a DMT stone that didn't have grit contamination and has complete diamond coverage including along the edges.It is unfortunate that it took 4 stones to get a good one. To say DMT's quality control is subpar is an understatement. I kept seeing good reviews and so thought maybe I was getting lemons, just a random bad one. But no. Everyone stone except this one had significant defects.That being said.... even with the defects the stones work well enough and will last. I know it's odd to say so much negative and have a 5 star review. That is simply because this stone was exactly what it should have been. No grit contamination, no missing coverage and a great stone. It cuts fast and leaves a uniform scratch patter. It is well built and will last year's making it a great buy for $50. If you can get a DMT diamond stone without any significant defects, then you're getting a good buy. These stones will last for a very long time if you take care of them and can cut any steel type including super steels like s110v or s90v.

As I mentioned in other reviews for this company’s products, these diamond blocks are super high quality and do a fantastic job on a knife edge. A little bit of a learning curve for cleaning and using but I absolutely love these things. Don’t be scared of the price, these things are worth every penny. Awesome product!

Great sharpening block. Originally purchased to flatten my high-grit stones, but have also used this to do some woodworking tool sharpening (Irwin chisels) & other household items (putty knives, hatchet). Very pleased w/ results. It's a bit rough for fine woodworking tools, but fine for my carpentry chisels (knowing they may accidentally hit a nail head when used). Great for hatchet/axe, putty knives, and other household items. When the time comes to replace my water stones, I'll probably go to the finest grit diamond stone - I expect this will give me the sharpness I desire in my fine woodworking chisels & planes.

I now have four diamond sharpeners. Three of them are DMT with this being the most course, all the way up to Extra Extra Fine 8000. It is perhaps ironic, but this plate (I never know whether to refer to DMT sharpeners as plates, stones or sharpeners) is proving to be one of the most useful. It can reprofile something like a 1" chisel from a multifaceted and rounded disaster, to a beautiful flat bevel in less than five minutes. It really eats metal, and like all diamond stones, it doesn't clog up. I use Window cleaner btw.I gave it four stars for value, but that should probably be four and a half as it was a lot less money than the DMT fine stones. Durability is looking like a three stars as I can see places where I am wearing through the diamond coating. You need to be careful with the outer edges, and not use it with slightly rusty metal, like restoring old planes for instance.All in all though, my DMT sharpening experience has been incredibly positive. My tools are far sharper than ever before, and you would not believe how nice a big kitchen knife feels to use after honing down to 8000 grit. I do actually use a motorized leather strop that I made to finish off with green buffing soap.

I wanted a diamond stone that could do triple-duty as a japanese waterstone flattener and knife repair type work, maybe even scissors or other household items. This stone seems to fit the bill but it did have some rough spots or raised diamond flecks that gouged-up my softer 5000 grit waterstone when new. To break in this DMT stone I ground off the the broken tip of an older chef's knife and used another smaller diamond stone to polish off the edges of this stone. It seems pretty uniform and OK for use on my waterstones now. Use caution if you decide to attack this diamond stone with another diamond stone in an attempt to speed up the break-in process. The edges of my new DMT coarse stone are now a bit too smooth and polished. The stone has lost its bite in those areas and I am unsure if it will return in time with use. Aside from the few aberrant rough spots out of the box, this DMT coarse stone isn't as coarse as I thought it would be. It produces a not-too-rough toothy edge that is appropriate as a final edge on some of my knives that I like to use for tougher chores. This 325 mesh DMT stone seems like a good compromise for people who want a diamond stone that can multi-task like myself.

I love this plate. It cuts nicely and no water or oil is needed. I own a set of DMT plates: the aforementioned 325 mesh (coarse) and as well as the 600 (fine) and 1200 (extra fine).You save a lot of time and money using these plates instead of water stones. No mess and no flattening stones necessary. No pressure is needed: just let the DMT do all the work. These DMT plates actually get better the more you use them.
