Works Well
I like this cable because it is the right length and it works well to attach an external hard drive to my new laptop. My laptop has a large internal SSD but I wanted to be able to create a portable backup so I needed a cable to attach my 1 TB external drive. The cable worked fine transferring data as fast at the drive could handle it and the fittings were nice and secure. I would recommend this cable because it has good quality and it's a great value. I also use it to connect my portable DVD-R to burn DVDS and it works well.

Great for backing up old drives
I needed a USB-C adapter to back up a bunch of my old drives onto a new NAS. This worked perfectly without any hiccups. Maxed out the drive speed for everything that I used it with (combination of IDE and SATA drives).

Narrow SATA connection fits drives that are inside caddies
I sometimes need to transfer data from laptop drives that are screwed into a metal caddy. Adapters with wider SATA connector blocks require the drive to be removed from the caddy first. Not a big deal, but this is more convenient. The cable is 16" long, which is a good length, allowing versatile positioning of the drive and easy coiling to fit into my toolbox. The adapter works great and seems well built. Unlike other adapters, this one shows up in Windows' "safe ejection" dialog as the model of the hard drive itself, rather than the model of the adapter's chipset, which is helpful. The only thing it lacks that would be good to have is an activity indicator LED so I know whether the drive is active or idle.

Gets Warm but works well
Well it works and yes it is Sata 3.1 but there are a few things that I did not like. First of all it tends to get very warm when it is being used. Second there is no LED to indicate that the drive is being accessed. There is a RED LED on the bottom that appears to indicate power. Lastly while the 20 inch cable may be adequate for use with a laptop it is a royal pain for a desktop with the USB3 connectors in the rear. If they had a 1 meter cable then this would be more suitable ... even better if it were a thin, flexible, braided cable.Update:Bus 004 Device 002: ID 174c:55aa ASMedia Technology Inc.ASM1051E SATA 6Gb/s bridge,ASM1053E SATA 6Gb/s bridge,ASM1153 SATA 3Gb/s bridgeI have noticed that the LED blinks when the drive is being accessed. The computer is an HP 8300 SFF (I7 CPU) and I using MB USB3 ports. The operating System is Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia 64-bit with Linux 4.15.0-33 x86_64 kernel.I used Silicon Power 64 Gbyte S60 SSD for testing.Internal Sata 3 (6 GB/s) : HP 8300 Motherboard (establish base line for drive)Read: 418.1 MB/sWrite: 276.9 MB/sAccess: 0.21 msecSustained Write for 20 GB file: 270 MB/sInternal USB 3.0 : HP 8300 Motherboard (MB USB3 Port)USB 3.1 to SATA3 Adapter: Startech USB312SAT3CBRead: 436.5 MB/sWrite: 286.5 MB/sAccess: 0.25 msecSustained Write for 20 GB file: 283 MB/sExternal USB3.1: Qnine X001Q6NWPD USB3.1 (10GB/s) in PCIe x 4 Slot (adapter card)USB 3.1 to SATA3 Adapter: Startech USB312SAT3CBRead: 443.2 MB/sWrite: 293.5 MB/sAccess: 0.25 msecSustained Write for 20 GB file: 190 MB/s

Works with raspberry pi
I have several different brands of these, which I use to connect ssd drives to raspberry pi computers. This is the ONLY one that actually works; the others just crash the computer. Even the "official" one does not work, but this one works like a charm. I just wish the cable was a bit shorter.
