A Wonderful Conversation Starter and Engaging Work for Girls
Our daughter picked up this book (we purchased it from Amazon and then "left it out" as opposed to simply suggesting she read it) and started reading. What followed (when she was about 75% through) was a fantastic dialogue between my daughter and my wife about the book. Here are some quotes from my daughter, as retold to me:"I'm so glad to know it's not just me""Even though some of these things haven't happened yet, I think I'll hang on to this book and refer back to it when I need it.""Did you have a book like this when you were growing up?""What is (fill in the blank)?""Some of the girls in my class are already wearing a bra. This book has great stuff in it about bras.""I had no idea some of those things would change.""This book is really interesting. I'd like to read more about some of the things in it.""I'm glad I can talk to you all about these things.""I feel like I'm better prepared for when some of these things start happening.""I knew some of these things.... or about some of these things, but I didn't really understand all about it. I feel better."This book is really a treasure. It was and is a conversation starter. It's practically a field guide to changing bodies, and it presents the information in an easy to understand way that girls can identify with. It's a comforting work, not some horrible shocker. We appreciate the spiritual perspective offered here, but I want to point out that the book is not some straight laced, conservative, morality exposition. Instead, this book works through the value of the human body and the reasons to take care of it, have pride in it, and realize your ownership of it. It inspires confidence. It's a very frank work that offers a very good perspective on all the things that change and deals with them in a forthright manner that is conversational. Consequently, it inspires conversation. I think it's excellent at helping to move past what can be awkward - not just avoiding it - and accepting change for what it is and how to approach things with a positive attitude.I highly recommend this book and think the age recommendation is spot on - 4th grade and/or 9 years of age.

Great little book for starting "The Talk" with you daughter.
As the mother of a 9 year old daughter I found this book to be very age appropriate. I thought the information presented was factual, the tips were helpful and the tone was casual and funny.I like that it says things in a very direct, matter-of-fact way, that it has topics I may not have thought to touch on and that it guides me and helps me not over-inform her. It gives basic information on the woman's reproductive organs, mentioning that a "guy" needs to contribute, but not the how. It encourages the girl to speak with her mother, or other appropriate adult and reassures her that while it might not always be easy it will be helpful. I also, like that the author addresses the fact that puberty is embarrassing but there are ways to deal with that.I think my daughter will like the quick "quizzes", that there are Q and A sections asked from a girls perspective, and there are some terms that will make her giggle but that's what keeps the book comfortable and fun to read.Above and beyond that I really enjoyed the Christian perspective and scripture that backs up each chapter. The book encourages girls to rely on God, to trust that He knows what will happen to them and to pray for guidance and comfort.

Great Christian-based book for young girls
This has been a great conversation starter with my 10 year old daughter. I really wanted a book that kept on point, focused on the immediate issues that a 10-year old needs to understand, and was Christian based. I read it through before handing it over to her to make sure it met all my requirements and I have been pleased with the results. This book really allowed my husband and I to talk with her about puberty without talking about the details of sex. We wanted to get through the basics of body change, hormones, and other crazy girl stuff before we started the whole sex conversation and this has really helped us make that happen. Our daughter has asked a lot of questions as she's been reading and we've had some great conversations. I'm very happy with the book (I especially like the Bible verses that are given to help her understand) and believe she will refer back to it several times over the next few years.
