Marseille, 1930s. Two small-time thieves join forces in various businesses: horse races, fights and soon they will see themselves working for the mob bosses of the city. However, when they decide to go back to work on their own, they will see that it is not so simple and that their perception of crime has begun to change.

BORSALINO- Cest bon mais n'set pas pour les Anglais...
If the above review title doesn't make any sense then this film probably is not for you. Borsalino (Edition Simple)DVD is in French only, as are the optional sub-titles. This is not made clear on the Amazon entry so be warned. That being said, its a great film and its reissue is welcome as it was unavailable new for a long time.Made in 1970, its two stars - Delon and Belmondo - were at the top of their game and the biggest actors in France. They portray two gangsters in Marseille in 1930, beginning as rivals who become partners in crime and rise up the criminal hierarchy. The tone changes in the second half from light hearted pastiche to something altogether darker. Alain Delon is particularly good, preceding the Michael character from 'The Godfather 1/11' in portraying the loneliness and paranoia necessary on becoming a capo. The film uses its locations well in the old docks area in Marseille which is still there. Clearly a lot of resource was given to recreating period clothes, cars, weapons, even hairstyling. The soundtrack, which became as famous in its own right, pervades the whole story.By the standards of today, the lighting and colouring might look a little bright and the shirts a lttle too clean for 1930 - compared with 'The Road to Perdition' for example, but the film should be considered more as a companion piece to 'The Sting', along which it compares very well and again, preceded by a few years. Recommended.

Classic
I was watching this on the B. B. C. the night Princess Diana was killed they interrupted it to announce the news. This left a lasting impression for a film I liked, I don't think it has ever been screened again on UK TV and can't get it on dvd or blu ray so to be able to get it on download was great. It is a great film with superb performances from both leading men who were their at their peak form at the time. Thouraghly recommended.

Great clothes but everything else average.
After the death of belmondo I thought I would have a look at this. It looks magnificent and both delon and belmondo have considerable magnetism. But the film can’t make up its mind as to whether it’s a gangster movie or a pastiche of one. The comedy and the catchy sound track distance the viewer and the actors from the reality of the violence but there still seems a sense that they want to say something serious, but fail.

A classic film
- with two real stars of French cinema. It looked as if they had a blast playing opposite each other in such a well written and directed movie. I first saw it at the cinema as a young man. Now in my 70s I managed to find it on DVD. I don't know why it was so difficult to find. Still, I have it now and can watch the film as often as I wish. Brilliant.

fine French felony
I got hold of this movie for a friend who had been yearning to get a copy of it for years. She loved re-visiting it after so long, and I very much enjoyed it for the first time. From the opening scenes of the two protagonists 'dealing with each other' over the lovely Lila, they form a great friendship and union in sorting out who needs to 'look after' Marseille. While not discarding entirely the realities of the times they found themselves in, this is also a colourful and enjoyable 'romp', combining light-hearted rivalries with the realities of dealing with the seamier and less trustworthy underworld. Very ambitious, romantic, scoundrels, chez Butch and Sundance.

Bit of a bromance gangster film :)
I always remember the sound track from childhood, as my parents had it on vinyl. Now finally i've watched the film! It didn't disappoint.Dvd arrived via post relatively quick from Switzerland. You have the option of watching in the original language of French, or in Italian. But both options with English subtitles. Only one slight oversight, i watched in French with English subtitles, there was a very small scene, only about a minute, between Siffredi & his mum, spoken in Italian, which had no subtiltes. Other than that all was fine with the viewing.
