Routledge Maps of Meaning

This is a weighty book in the best sense, in every sense. It houses a mind to be reckoned with. This is the book that I would save in a fire. I hope I live long enough to read it many times. Jordan B Peterson is a blessing to us all.

Peterson is an important individual who has some indisputable truths to discuss about our human experience.Essentially he is encouraging the reader to discover what is meaningful to them as individuals. This point is getting lost on people with rigid and flawed ideologies.This book is complex and is the culmination of many years of deep, rational thought.

In this wide-ranging and compelling thesis — which takes in cognitive neuroscience, behavioural psychology, narrative mythology and Scripture, and leans heavily on the ideas of Nietzsche, Jung, Eliade, Piaget, Frankl and Solzhenitsyn — Peterson shows that the Judeo-Christian narrative-mythological story remains a vital underpinning of Western society, and that Western society jettisons that story at its peril. First published twenty years ago, ‘Maps of Meaning’ is a fascinating (and tragic) insight into the precipitous decline in meaning and identity that we see happening around us today.

Peterson manages to put Jung's insights into a usable format when working with others professionally, or with yourself. The Map of Meaning model is a good approach to use when working with clients to help them understand why they're in such chaos and how they can begin to get out of it. After talking about the practical aspects, Peterson's review of alchemy helped me understand better what Jung had been saying. One book I will not sell!
