It's Weird and Wonderful
It didn't really strike me how odd the Otamatone looks until I held that beautiful tadpole monster in mine own hands. Still, it doesn't feel cheap or gimmicky. It feels like a serious product even though it looks and sounds kind of ridiculous.Playing it is fun and hilarious, but surprisingly, trying to work out intervals and fingerings and actually trying to play it seriously is both possible and enjoyable. I specialize in high effort, low quality memes, and spending my time perfecting the chorus to "Take On Me" on the Otamatone is the perfect Friday evening.Getting it to work took less than 3 minutes, and the features on the back (e.g. octave control, volume) are satisfying and work well. The touchpad is responsive and you don't have to press down very hard.It was a great waste of money. otama-ten out of ten would buy again

it's a good one
Bought two of these, japanese version. They both work great right out of the box and still working weeks later so they seem to be good quality. The instructions were in japanese (which I imagine is the only difference between the japanese and english versions)But it includes pictures and the whole thing is easy to set up, no instructions required.People complain about having to push the board down or something but it hardly takes any effort to do so, I didn't have a problem with it.I imagine people who play the violin would have an especially easy time learning this instrument as it is slightly similar. It's actually quite loud when the volume is turned all the way up so that isn't an issue. You can plug headphones into it but it will still play the sound through the speaker as well as the headphones. The first few lines on the volume knob don't actually cause the otamatone to produce sound, you need to turn it up a couple notches before sound actually comes out.It has a line out, though the input hole is about as big as a normal headphone plug and is not big enough to fit a normal guitar cable for example. The top tail thing can be rotated in any position you like, and the metal loops for the neck/shoulder strap which it comes with can also be rotated 360 degrees. It's a fun instrument and I recommend it to any music enthusiast who wants something interesting but also functional.
