Very pleased, yet challenging
I did a lot of research before purchasing this unit. It was relatively simple to set up initially, although because of the incredible potential of this NAS system, I realized that simple is not necessarily getting my money’s worth. Basically I went through the full setup, it worked, but poorly, because my simple setup was at best naive, actually it circumvented the design and did not leverage its true capabilities.I played with this setup and it’s options for a few weeks, which, coupled with digging into the manual, gave me a better understanding of why it was designed the way it is and how to take advantage of that. With this knowledge, I went back and started to set it up again as if it was right out of the box. I am so much happier with both its function and its performance. If you are new to NAS systems as I am, expect a steep learning curve, don’t be in a rush to get the unit “ on line” so to speak. This is a multi layer item that goes from simple to very complex. Where there is complexity, this unit provides real power! It is well worth investing time to get everything the manufacturer put into it.I am using the system for recording surveillance camera data, storing movies, music, photos and backing up all the computers in the house. I can see a time when 8 bays may not be enough. Qnap has solutions for that too! Great product, love that I can connect to it at 10Gbs.

Substantial
It's a very nice machine. Excellent build quality. Lots of expansion options and very zippy on 10g. I am using this for media storage and not as a full blown media server. I have a pc that does that job for plex. But, I also have zidoo players and this streams to all of those things. Keeping that in mind and for my use case, it's perfect. I upgraded to 8gb of ram. That's all. Movies load quickly.

Software isn't always the best
NAS itself works great, but the setup software can leave a bit to be desired. Has been running 24x7 for the better part of a year without issue.

Great machine
I loaded (3) drive bays with 6TB drives and set them up as a RAID 5. I'm using this primarily as a server to store my movie collection (DVD, Blu-ray, 4k Blu-rays). I connected this directly to my computer via the 10Gbps port (You'll need to set both the QNAP and computer 10Gbps ports to a static IP). I can't stress using the 10Gbps connection enough. Although my current hardware is creating a bottleneck, I was able to get an extra 160MB/s in transfer speed (right now at 250 MB/s in Windows 10 and 230MB/s in Linux Ubuntu). The unit was recognized very easily by my Zidoo Z9X media player, as I have them both connected to my router and switch via the 1Gbps ports. If you can afford it, I'd do SSD drives to fill this unit up, but as of this writing, 4TB is still roughly $400. If you're storing 4K blurays without compression, those files range from 50GB to 80GB on average, so those drives will fill up really fast! This system is pretty intuitive and there are a gazillion features I'll probably never use, but it's nothing short of amazing. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out some of the features and to get it working how I needed it. Hope some of this information helps.

Qnap install
NAS SERVER arrived undamaged and was simple to install. I installed the drives simply with a couple of screws and push and play. I mounted the appliance on the wrack and started it up was able to find it on the networks and setup easily. Began by setting up users and then transferring data with no issues.

Can only run 16 cameras in QVR Pro. If you intend to use it for Surveillance, look elsewhere.
8 Bay Nas but only can run up to 16 cameras due to ARM processor support for QVR Pro. Very disappointing that this is buried in the fine print and not listed on the product page in any way. Discovered this several months after the return window had closed.

No dedupe...
Purchased this for my office and found out that dedupe is only supported on Intel and AMD based QNAP NAS devices. Unfortunately this is not supported on this device. A little disappointed to say the least as it took a lot of digging after receiving the NAS to find out why the dedupe and compression options were completely missing. I really wish that the listing had been more clear on this feature being absent.
