Highly recommend this book for anyone traveling to Thailand. Yes, it’s a “modern” and “developed” country, but things are done very differently there.Thailand was branded as “The Land of Smiles” in the 1980s by their savvy tourism board but, as the author explains, a smile can mean many things in Thailand. Having a sense of what’s going on behind the veneer is your gateway to understanding and experiencing Thailand at its most authentic and enjoyable.The contents cover everything from history and politics, to values, traditions, religion, and cuisine. It gives helpful advice on meeting people, socializing the Thai way, and how to be a good guest, as well as information on communicating and getting around. The info is offered in a digestible format and emphasises the practical. Lots of advice on the pitfalls to avoid, too.

Good value book, with some interesting facts on the country. Good reading for the tourist.

Complete but less wordy than some travel books. Provides an overview of a number of important topics including history, culture, and communication.

I read this book before we flew to Thailand. It sure helped our month long visit and taught us a lot we did not know. I highly recommend reading this book if you know nothing about the people in Thailand. Extremely informative.

Some of the history sections were too wordy and would like more on day to day life.Helpful introduction to some of the cultural norms

The content is very good, straight to the point and easy to digest. It covers a wide range of topics and the chapters are not too long (just the right size). -1 star for two reasons: the book was delivered a little bit damaged (see photos) and I wish the photos in the book were printed in color.
