I saw comments on another product with a metal base & flowers that they were galvanized to prevent rust, but is toxic to birds. Is this the same?

I have no idea about the toxicity of this hummingbird feeder's base. I did notice any strange residue or flaking of the base coating. As far as I know, no birds have been harmed by the product I purchased. Last season the same birds continued to use these same feeders throughout the season, and I never saw any of them harmed. You start to recognize these beautiful birds by their markings (I enjoy photographing them). I would never have praised a product that harmed any human or animal. With this being stated, I still sanitize everything I purchase that will be utilized in conjunction with food for my family or animals prior to initial use. With this product, I placed the glass container in the dishwasher, and hand washed the base prior to using (in the interest of safety). We do the same for the dishes and coated cookware we purchase prior to their use. I do wash the base with a dedicated brush simply because all birds naturally carry certain diseases, and I do not want to risk cross contamination between the scrub brushes for my family's dishes and the bird feeders. (Obviously, we would never use the same brush to clean a dog food bowl and our personal dishes).FYI: We cannot control the manufacturing techniques utilized by overseas manufacturing. The  outsourcing that has taken away the majority of our manufacturing jobs in the US is based on inexpensive labor, and little to no EPA standards overseas. This is across the board with all products we purchase overseas; our own dishes, cookware, small appliances, etc. As consumers, we do the best we can to pre-wash all items used for food (humans or animals) prior to first use. Does the base unscrew for easy cleaning?

Yes it does, and it has a wider mouth so you can actually get into the glass to clean out the jar.  Honestly, the best feeder we have and we tried five different ones.  The birds prefer it to the red plastic/glass ones we had.  The base is all metal so put it in the shade so the metal stays cool.  To feed they go down into the flowers as they sit rather than flying and going up into it so with several types of feeders in the yard they always go to these feeders as they drink easier....

Question 3

I'm not sure if there are hummingbirds in our area, how do I know if they will come?

Hummingbirds seem to live everywhere.  I put up one feeder 30 years ago having no idea if I would get any.  I've always had many hummers.  But this year I decided to add a 2d feeder & bought this one.  It got such a great response that I threw out my old faithful and bought another of these.  Now I can barely keep up with the necter.  But do realize that they should be migrating South for the winter so you may not see any.  Or you may see lots since they seem to still be on the move and very hungry, at least in my area of northern california.  I had dozens this afternoon, but soon they should be gone until spring.  They love this feeder.
