great quality, info re: packaging
these watercolors are truly wonderful, but there's one thing to know for anyone who's buying them for the first time.unlike other sennelier sets, the individual color cakes are not wrapped. they are also not attached or filled into the pans. they are loose. you will hear rattling when you move the box. when you open the box, you'll see loose color flakes. this is normal: i returned my first set and reordered.the cool thing is that you can arrange the loose cakes in the order you want. color cakes are then held steady drops of water in the pan underneath.i am happy with the item, but would have liked to know this before buying.I hope this info helps!

This is a great set. Sennelier provides the color chart on the side of the box in which the paint set comes and it includes color number, ASTM rating, Opacity/Transparency rating and color name in French and English. They use the same color numbers to identify the colors as the professional line (some name colors are different) which tells you that they probably use the same pigments in their student and professional lines. Although, they obviously would use less pigment in the student line than they would in the professional line. Just a couple of the paints vary/differ from their professional counterpart in terms of ratings which could be because they are using hues instead of the real thing for some pigments (which can make them more stable/lightfast).Note some color names are meant to help beginners pick the "right" color for mixing and practicing and to make it easier to understand colors for beginners, as well as make a difference between the professional and student lines; ergo the 'primary' in some color names and the simplification of other like 'green yellow'.The information and ratings shown in the box are as follows:Reading Guide: Color Number Color Name - ASTM Rating - Opacity/Transparency Rating (T/O means Semi Transparent and/or Semi Opaque)After the ~~~ I have added the professional line paint color name corresponding to the same paint number, in the cases where the name was changed, for reference and/or comparison and I have included their pigment number/code for each of the professional paints as per the Sennelier catalog and website. In cases where there is no name change you will see just the pigment codes followed by the ASTM Rating and T/O Rating in parenthesis.(I just thought this might be easier than looking at a big chart where all the info is spread out over a whole sheet as opposed to in a list.)116 Titanium White - I - O ~~~ PW6 (I - O)501 Lemon Yellow - II - T ~~~ PY3 (II - T)574 Primary Yellow - III - T/O ~~~ PY74 (n.r. - T/O)579 Sennelier Yellow - n.r. - T/O ~~~ Sennelier Yellow Deep PY83, PY153 (I - T/O)645 Orange - n.r. - T ~~~ Chinese Orange PY150, PR209, PBr23 (I -T)641 Sennelier Orange - n.r. - T ~~~ PO73 (n.r. - T/O)695 Primary Red - n.r. - T ~~~ Alizarin Crimson Lake PR83 (III -T)690 Rose Madder Lacquer - I - T ~~~ Rose Madder Lake PV19 (I - T)913 Cobalt Violet Hue - I - T ~~~ Cobalt Violete Deep Hue PR122, PV16 (II - T/O)315 Ultramarine - I - T ~~~ Ultramarine Deep PB29 (I - T)307 Cobalt Blue Hue - I - O ~~~ Cobalt Blue PB28 (I - T)341 Phthalo. The first couple of times I swatched this palette I was disappointed in the strength of some of the pigments. There were 6 colors that were pale. I noticed that some pans looked like they were "melting". I put a large drop of water on each pan with a pipette. The pan surfaces looked really different after the water soaked in. I swatched them again and the colors were all stronger. I started to see what some people had said about them being creamy and buttery. There's like a seal on them when they're new, so it's hard to get a load of pigment on a small brush. Give them a soak and they should be fine. I still find the raw umber and burnt umber colors rather different from other palettes, perhaps to make them more mixable with other colors. I did some mixing with raw umber and got an interesting array of neutrals from several colors. I chose 4 stars because the pans are a little irregular in size, a couple of them did not completely fill up the space.

The best I have used
I just started water coloring about a year ago. I bought so many different brands to try out but even on the best papers they still did not wow me. I put it aside because I was not getting the feel and results of water coloring. Just recently I signed up for a class and the woman was using Sennilier paints. I use their pastels and love them so I thought I would try their watercolors. Yesterday I spent time using all the brands I had on good paper and average paper. I still had a problem with getting the paint to look smooth like the instructors examples. I decided to try Sennilier. WOW! They are wonderful!! My frustrations with doing this medium was because I was using the wrong paints. You need the right tool for the right job and these did the trick. Even on student grade paper they look great! I would highly recommend these paints. Now I will be adding more to my wish list.

amazing, wish i had these sooner
These are so good, and not just for beginners. Bc they are more translucent, it’s wonderful for under painting or if you tend to over paint and overwork art, you don’t end up with an overly dark mess. These are lovely and they mix and layer well with my schminke and artist sennelier paints. i absolutely love these and you can’t beat the price and fast delivery.

Lovely paints, amazing price
I bought these as a poor man's back up to certain colors. I've been using daniel smith and some Windsor and newtons. I hate to say that I was very surprised at the creaminess. I prefer tube/wet paint because you just can't seem to get right enough color. These are awesome. I did have a few fall out of the pans, but no problem there. I've only done a few things with them so far and I did them on cheap paper, but I love them. One teeny drop of water and you get a lovely righ color.Nice depth and spreadablity, Not sure how well they lighten yet, I got some hard lines, but again, cheap paper.the box was very thick and seems sturdy.Update: I am not sure what to think. I did test runs of the colors and they separated, and made hard likes when they dried. (See image) they bled and watermarked, a lot. I guess it actually can lend an interesting texture to your painting, but I am not thrilled anymore. I'm a bit worried to use them on a nice painting. I tried a quick poppy, with thick paint to see what I would get. Not loving it. The thick areas seem chalky. Changing my review to 3 stars. Too many unknowns with the paint.

Good quality student grade paint set
This watercolor paint set and the palette are of good quality. The palette is one of my favorites as it can hold 12 more half-pans of paint in the middle. There is enough room at the top of each row of paint to put a sticker with the name of the paint. The mixing area in the lid is well-designed and useful. If you scrub the mixing palette with something rough the paint will not bead up. The paint is easy to rewet and is highly pigmented. I have used the smaller set of 12 and I think that the vibrancy of the paint has increased. I highly recommend this paint set for the quality. The beautiful case with an embossed logo and the high-quality paint makes a great gift.

wow
i have hankered after these paints for a long time but couldn't justify buying the artist colours. these paints are amazing if you don;t let them wind you up, i have used them for wet on wet and found you just let them do their own thing, don't keep messing with them as it will frustrate you. just go with it. love them.

Perfecto
