What activates the bead breaker . is there a switch of some kind or does it start when you turn on the air?

The square box is an air powered hydraulic pump that is foot pedal operated. Press one side of pedal and it makes Hyd pressure, press the other side and it vents that built up pressure back to the tank inside it. It uses regular shop air off your air compressor. The required or max air pressure will be in its instructions/warnings booklet.
  First you connect the Hyd hose from pedal pump box to the breaker tool. Then when you step on the "pump" side of the pedal, the Jaws of the breaker will close on wheel, pushing the wheel/tire separator fingers into the space between tire and wheel. When those fingers bottom out in that gap, the center of the "fingers" claw will start to push the tire further from the wheel, or closer to the center of the wheel. You may have to "break" the bead in one spot then retract it, then repeat in another spot a foot or so around the wheel to work the tire off bead evenly. Do both sides of the wheel, but do the side you won't be taking tire off of first, then flip tire over and then break the other side completely. Then with tire irons, remove the tire! 😊 Youtube a video of this in use and you'll see the steps I listed and that its really a simple awesome tool. These "air over Hyd" bead breakers kick butt and are awsome for semi tires and bigger. You can break both beads and take a tire off a backhoe/tractor with the wheel still on the Axle. Used one for years at a Firestone shop!

This bead breaker is for large farm , and construction tires . Prob would work on smaller tires and wheels but it would scratch the wheel and is extreme overkill

You could also look at electric over hydraulic power units (I guess Amazon doesn't let you edit answers).  Most hydraulic units (air over hydraulic/ electric over hydraulic) will generate 10,000 psi of hydraulic fluid force.  YOU don't need that to break tire beads.  I think the HIGHEST PSI I've hit when breaking beads is 1,000 PSI.  You could use a 12V dump trailer unit if you don't have access to compressed air or 110V power.  And when your at 1,000 PSI with the bead breaker..............WATCH OUT......if that sucker comes off the rim it will hurt.  So anyway..........you have alot of options other than the hand pump.
