Make showers great again, use Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap
I tried this soap after having it recommended to me by some friends on the internet as an alternative to modern soaps filled with harsh chemicals and xenoestrogens. I've used this soap for over a month now and I'm very pleased with the results. To start of with, the soap comes in a simple cardboard box. No messy plastic packaging, just the box and the bar of soap inside. On the front is the logo with Grandpa's face on it, on the back is the history and story of the soap, and on the left side is a simple easy to understand list of ingredients. No mile long list of chemicals here. Through the box, you can smell the powerful, clean scent of pine tar. I currently have several bars of this soap in my towel closet and it has the added bonus of acting as a natural air freshener. Every time I open the door, I'm greeted by this smell. I very pleased by this powerful, masculine scent, which I've come to like much better than the standard fruity and floral scents of other soaps. The soap leaves a slight scent of pine tar on your skin, this wears off after an hour, two at most. The woody scent smells like barbecue, this combined with the rich brown color sometimes makes me hungry when I look at it.The soap lathers white, just like the box states. With just a bit of water and some rubbing, you get plenty of suds to wash yourself with, no sodium lauryl sulfate needed. The stamp on the soap wears off within 2 or 3 showers and the bar shrinks noticeably quickly. I highly recommend getting a soap holster and sticking it as far from the shower head as possible, this will minimize any accidental soap loss and it will keep the soap from leaving residue on the tub or shower stall. This soap works well as a shaving agent, and I'm now using it for all my shaving. The only problem I've had with this is a slimy residue left on my face, but I think that this may be from not continuously lathering it. The soap leaves my skin feeling taut and smooth after washing with it, afterwards it still as soft as it ever wash when I used other brands of soap. The back of the package states that this soap is not tested on animals. Well, I decided to do some animal testing of my own. My dog has a habit of rolling in the grass and I have a suspicion that the spots she rolls in are spots that animals have peed in. I washed her with the soap she had no problem with it. It left her fur fluffy and soft and she is rolling around slightly less than she was. I think that this is because the pine tar scent is more natural and not as overpowering to her nose than other soaps. This soap is not cheap, 4 dollars a bar or slightly less is about the best is price you're going get for this. Before I wrote this, I specifically counted the number of days I could make a bar last. The most I've gotten was about 2 1/2 weeks out of this in a combination with a soap holster, though a small person might get 3 with careful use. I am very satisfied by the soap itself, and I'm very pleased to be using old school, simple, made in America soap.

That Smell, Though...
My son and I love the smell of Squatch pine tar soap, but I was looking for something a little less expensive that might last longer. Saw all of the comments about it smelling like a campfire, etc., and figured some people just don't like the aroma of pine tar.Well, this smells nothing like any pine tar I've smelled. The smell, even before I opened the box, was very off-putting. Does it smell like a campfire? Yes... one that, as it's dying, you put all your camp trash in, and then, in the morning, since it's still smoldering, you pee on to put the rest of the way out.The good news is, the smell is not nearly so strong once you start using it, AND, as far as I can tell, does not cling to you out of the shower. The great news is, it is really good soap. I use it on my hair and beard and LOVE how clean it gets them. And it lasts WAY, way longer than a bar of Squatch, for a fraction of the price. Give it a try!

It has a strong, but not overpowering scent
This is a really nice soap, that claimed I could use it as a body/face/shampoo soap. I tested all three use cases and didn't suffer from any kind of dry skin, my hair was none the worse for wear either. There is no exfoliant in this soap so users will want to use some kind of loofa or washcloth alongside the soap to make sure you get that dead skin off. Finally, its time to talk about the scent of the soap itself, the only other pine scented soap I have to compare it to is a bar of Dr. Squatch Pine tar soap, which has a much different scent profile, surprisingly. The closest I can think of is remembering a smell that would soak into my clothes when I used to camp when I was younger, the trees around us were mostly pines and we would use fallen logs as a fuel source. That about sums up what the soap smells like. It is important to note that the soap will give off a scent and that scent will tend to fill up your bathroom, unless overpowered by a stronger scent (another soap in my case). If you're sensitive to smells, you might want to skip out on this bar entirely. The last talking point I can think of is that these bars come in at 3.25 ounces, so they sit a little on the small side when it comes to bar soap which Im used to seeing at around 5 ounces per bar or bigger (I'm looking at you, Duke Cannon). The product specifically in my review is a 2-pack, and I am still a little too early in my usage to get a good idea of the lifespan, so I'll make sure to update my review if the soap stands out from what I think each bar should last for by a wide enough margin. All in all, its everything I wanted in a pine tar body soap, though exfoliants would have been nice too.

A real pine tar soap with a minor caveat
I'll start with the only "negative" aspect, the scent. Most pine tar soaps have a pleasant pine scent due to the addition of "pine fragrance" (who knows what that actually is). Grandpa's doesn't have such an additive which results in an unusual scent (i.e. the natural smell). Fortunately, the odor doesn't carry over onto the user (you won't smell like anything after using it), but you'll definitely notice this peculiar smell when you handle the soap. This minor shortcoming aside, Grandpa's is roughly half the price of the leading brand, lasts longer, and, most importantly works better. Grandpa's quickly addressed some issues I was having with skin irritation, leaving my skin feeling clean and moisturized; where as the other brand just left me smelling like a a pine air freshener. Overall, a quality, truly natural, product that works well for minor skin conditions.

Powerful soap but not too harsh
I love this soap. It's very powerful and smells great but it's not harsh or chemically. As a dude, I like the smell and how weak it cleans. It also seems good for those with skin conditions like sensitivity to perfumes and dyes. I'm no dermatologist but it seems to work well Smith my family members who are particularly sensitive to deodorant soaps. It's worth a look if that's you.
