A little ingenuity and its great.
Yes, the metal edges are sharp but a little duck tape fixes that. Because I got the 21 hook, I added tape at either end of the flip loops to eliminate shifting. I also ran a line of clear nail polish along the curved edge although it didn’t feel sharp. The wooden disc had a few rough spots that sanded out easily. I don’t think all those rubber bands “broke;” I think they were cut by the sharp, untreated edges. The 5 I got work fine. The larger disc will not fit inside a sock, but if you have THAT big a hole, you have a bigger problem than this handy gadget can fix.The directions are cr*p but there are some very good videos on line. Watch several so you get the best instructions.

Ignore the bad reviews. it's worth every penny
Yes the edges are sharp. yes the wood could use a sanding. it's still worth EVERY PENNY. a speedweve of the same materials (wood and metal instead of plastic) but a minimally higher quality costs $80 anywhere else. the plastic ones on here aren't any better than this one. if you have a metal file and a sheet of sandpaper in your toolbox and about 10 minutes of time, you can fix all the issues listed in the negative reviews. I haven't had a single rubber band break, but they carry rubber bands at the dollar store if they do end up breaking. don't get the larger looms if you're worried about it breaking, i got the 14 hook one and that's all you really need. for bigger patches you can work in sections and it's easier than dealing with the mess the hooks can become during shipping or during use. I'm not too bothered by the fact that the surface isn't concave either, like other reviews said.. i haven't found a single model of speedweve that has a concave center honestly. i promise you I'm going to be using this thing until I'm an old grandma. I'm here begging all my friends to wash and send over their holey socks because i love darning with this thing so much 😂and i HATED darning before i got this beautiful little contraption.

Solid enough
The hooks are a little flimsy and the images are not all of the actual product but close enough (mostly). The rubber bands do easily break and the instruction book kind of sucks.ALL THAT SAID, I am pleased with the outcome and enjoy the process (seriously, I'm going to start cutting holes in things just to mend them).I used YouTube to learn how to use it and used hair bands and a length of elastic cord I tied to the proper size.I'm a sewist and a weaver, among other fiber crafts, so this felt easy enough and fairly intuitive. I will probably invest in a bit better quality one eventually if I don't get bored with it. I'd like the hooks closer together but for 8 dollars, it was beyond worth it to see how I like the process.

Don't discard, mend!
This excellent tool will help me do art-quality visible mending much easier & faster than just working with a needle.

It's perfectly functional, but ONLY if
It's perfectly functional, but ONLY if you have the tools, ability, and patience to improve it. If you're not willing and able to do that, just don't bother. If you're a crafter looking for this after seeing your favorite CosTuber use one, you know this is a very old style tool, so it's pretty much impossible to mess up the mechanics if you know what you're looking at.So here's what arrived: The body is a stamp-cut piece of sheet metal with some rough edges in the back. The disk is flat and cheap, which makes it difficult to use, and its rough and jagged in places -- it needs sanded and sealed. The rubber bands might break if you look at them funny. The other two pieces are a very long, sharp needle and a latch hook.If you have pliers, time, and mod podge, you can probably make this work, but if you need to use it immediately, go choose something nicer.

Straight up unusable garbage, with misleading photos.
This review is for the 21 hook version, though I think they're all made from the same sharp, flimsy metal. The photos in the listing where the hooks are actually contoured toward the ends, and the metal is not as shiny---those are NOT the product you're buying. Even though it's literally pictured with the actual crap product. I really should have noticed before buying, but maybe this will help someone else not make the same mistake. The actual product is thin metal with sharp edges that will immediately snap every rubber band included, regardless of how much you hold you breath and gently ease it into place. SNAP. The edges are sharp enough to cut me, too, which they did when I used a piece of twine in place of the rubber band. Sigh. Still--I wanted to actually try it before throwing it dramatically from the top of an abandoned train trestle at midnight. That was when I realized that the hooks are plain wire, sharp and rough at the ends, and with no way to flip them back and forth easily. They get tangled around each other, they rip the embroidery thread instead of hooking it into place, and they cause you to question all your life choices.Buy this is you really hate someone but need to get them a gift for some reason.

A great way to repair expensive socks.
I found this relatively easy to use. I did go on YouTube and look up some tutorials before I started and that really helped. I have repaired socks, the old-fashioned way with only a darning needle and a wooden egg, and I definitely find this way so much better. It still may be a bit slow for some people, but the results are worth it. I know I’ll use this again and again. I found it fun to use and I listen to podcasts while using the loom.
