Do you place this directly in a pot (with the bottom touching the pot)? Our what is the suggested setup for melting the wax in it?

Yes. I fill a large stock pot with some water (about 1/2 full—too much water and the pouring pot will float all around and not be steady and a mess will ensue) and then add the pouring pitcher filled with wax. As the water heats up it melts the wax inside the pitcher. The bottom of the pitcher does touch the bottom of the stock pot. I also always hook the handle of the pouring pot over the edge of the stock pot edge for increased stability.

How to clean it between uses?

I just wipe with a paper towel before the wax dies completely.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Never tried but I don’t see why not!
