Marcel Breuer Cesca Chair Replacement Cane Seat & Back in Black (Made in Italy; NO Holes)

I had called around trying to find someone to install new cane panels for my 50+ year old Breuer Chairs and the only quote I could find was $500 per chair, he just really didn't want to do it, and he recommended just getting the new seat and back sets. So I did and am very happy with my decision. The trick is to get them on as there is no directions with the package. Simple you think, but the frames don't remain stable once the seat and back are removed. So I got the first two screws in the seat, and the first two screws on the back, and then finished the job. As I was doing a pair, the first was my learning curve, then the next one was a snap. They look great, like brand new, which in reality they are now at least 50% new.

I am having trouble fitting the seat onto the frame of the chair . There is a very slight gap between the holes on replacement chair and the position of the holes on the metal frame. I left the whole "project" aside and will try again when I have time and patience to figure it out. The holes on the frame of the seat are tiny.

I think there is a difference between knoll cesca chairs and the ones that just say Breuer. Whatever the case, these were not the originals (60s) but look like they fit some of the newer versions of the chairs.Differences:1) the seat back wooden frame is thicker and slightly smaller in height. Does not look as sleek.2) seat back is a slightly different curvature (not as curved).3) for both seat and chair, instead of the caning being woven through tiny holes in the seat giving it a clean finished look, the caning is tucked into a groove and kept in place by a band. This breaks up some of the most appealing aesthetic of the chair. It also gives less surface area to the caning so that changes the look.4) we ordered the black lacquer. The original chair is like a hard shiny black enamel, you can almost see your reflection in it. This one is much more matte.5) there were tons of areas where the caning was split. Not a hole, just like little tendrils of caning sticking out. We could imagine a few ruined sweaters from that. Also just didn't scream "high quality".In all, not what I expected, but yes it matches the description and likely matches newer versions of the chair. But look up knoll cesca at knoll or lekker's website and you will see those differences. If you want the original, go with knoll. (See the price tag on knoll? You know it's the real deal)

My favorite Breuer Chair, which I use many hours per day, needed a replacement seat. This was not the first time.However, this time I feel confident that I'll enjoy the new seat for a long time. The quality is better than anything I have purchased before. 😊 Thank you!

Loved this replacement set - buying more for the rest of my chairs! It was a 2-man job to get them installed on my frame, but it worked perfectly in the end. The back part of the set appeared slightly less curved than my existing back, but that could easily be due to the decades of use.
