Terrifying Experience, Awesome Results
My Wilson double-collar bomber jacket--a $25 find-of-the-decade from the local second-hand store--is like no other jacket I have ever worn. The dark brown leather is soft and supple, to be sure, but it's the design that makes this jacket irreplaceable: the inner collar that zips up the neck; the double-button cuffs; the durable brass hardware; the ventilated back panel that is cool for late spring, summer evenings, and early fall; and the zip-in liner that has kept me warm for three Northwest winters. It would be heartbreaking to lose it or see it damaged in some way.So after a few years of wear out in the elements, the rich brown was starting to fade and dry, and I knew I needed to do something. I tried a little Lexol on the back panel. Meh... Darker and more supple, but also a bit "muddy-looking". Enter Obenauf's Leather Oil. I didn't really know what to expect, and I was a little terrified. I mean, I knew from all my reading that it would darken the leather, but I didn't have much insight into the process.I gently wiped the oil on, section by section, using the funny little sponge applicator attached to the lid. I spread and massaged the oil in with my bare hands. It wasn't looking that great. I waited a day and decided that I might as well go for broke; perhaps another light coat would improve things. Afterwards, the jacket just seemed heavy and dark, with an almost oily matte sheen to it. Had I ruined it? Was this leather (calfskin, maybe?) too soft to be using this product? I nervously resolved to hang the jacket in a warm area of the house for a week; if it didn't improve, I would attempt to machine-wash the ugly oil out using a technique I had found on YouTube. But Lo! It *did* improve! After about five days the oily sheen had disappeared, and by the end of the week the leather began to look richer than ever before, and I felt like wearing it again. Over the next few weeks the color and texture only improved, and more than a month later it has come to look freakin' AWESOME.A month later, emboldened by my experience and now that the weather was turning cooler and wetter, I decided to add some rain-resistance with some Obenauf's Heavy-Duty LP. I zapped the little container in the microwave for about 15 seconds to soften the wax, and using a hairdryer to warm the jacket, I applied the LP over a selection of panels. One coat, only. The leather darkened a little more. It and my hands smelled like honey. The next day, the surface of the leather had a slightly waxy but still supple feel to it. Water beaded nicely on the surface. After all of this, I am totally sold on Obenauf's.

Awesome product!
My grandma gave me her old and heavily worn ankle length leather jacket. It had never been cleaned or conditioned in the years that she used it. This leather conditioner was exactly what this coat needed. It has an applicator in the bottle which makes the process easier. I will say that it’s hard to do thin layers; this stuff goes on thick which is great for leather that is very dehydrated like mine. Just be careful applying and blot away excess if your leather doesn’t need that much to drink. The coat came out beautifully.

Brings New Life to Old Dry Leather. Incredible Stuff!
I have an old teenage rebellion heavy metal motorcycle style black leather jacket that for almost 30 years now that has spent many years in my closet now because of its sorry condition. Granted, I treated this jacket horribly in my youth. It had been through everything and it looked like it with a lot of light grey wear, scuffs, scrapes and even cuts. It’s seen extreme hot and cold, been used as a pillow and blanket many times, had many various drinks spilled on it, was rained on, sweat in, slept in, sat on, thrown around on sand, dirt, mud and water. Youname it and it’s been there, done that. And after all of that, I never, ever cleaned it or treated it. I pulled it out a couple years ago to wear it and I couldn’t. It was too stiff to wear comfortably so I put it back in the closet. The best words to describe it were stiff, dry and crunchy.I can across Obenauf’s leather oil here a couple months back and decided to give it a try. I tell you, when I first started to apply the oil with the applicator, my jacket absorbed it faster than a hot desert does with a sprinkle of water. I noticed that the treated parts immediately started to loosen up. I originally planned to apply one coat but it was disappearing so fast that I just kept making my way around and didn’t stop applying until the wet look didn’t instantly disappear anymore. I ended up using more than half the bottle as the jacket didn’t stop drinking up till that point. The end result was a complete transformation. What began as a stiff and dry old jacket shortly became a soft, pliable and truly restored looking and feeling leather jacket. And it even has a newer leather smell to it. The most miraculous result came from an 4 inch square on the back shoulder that had long ago faded to a light grey/brown. I never understood why that part only changed color so drastically but it did and I figured I’d have to dye it again if I wanted to return it to its original black. I didn’t think this oil would do anything but soften that part of the jacket. When applied to that faded square, it instantly turned it black. I thought it was just wet and that it would lighten up as it dried but it didn’t and it hasn’t. It’s black again and you’d never even know where that faded patch was anymore. Incredible! I just wish I had taken a before picture but I had no idea this would be the result. The rest of the jacket also looks a much darker and deeper black like it used to. In fact, it hasn’t looked or felt this good since those first year after I broke it in. I had no idea a jacket in the condition mine was in could ever be restored like this from a simple oil treatment.I can’t recommend Obenauf’s Leather Oil enough. If it could transform my old and abused jacket like it did, I don’t think there’s much it can’t do. I’ll be using this for any other present and future leather products from now on. Get it if you need it. It really works.
