Q: Does one keep the white squishy stuff under the keys - seems to muffle sound

I bought this for a toddler and I left it under the keys, it didn't occur to me to remove it. If you want the sound louder I suppose you could remove it but it might change the sound. Not much help but I'd leave it.

Q: Is A tuned to 432 or 440 hertz?

I assume you realize this is a kids TOY , this toy is not assembled in anyway to be used as a real instrument , if you Really Really wanted too , you could probably rework the mountings and tune the bars to exact tones - but my chickens play quite interesting songs despite all these shrt comings.
