This is hot! No, cool! No, hot! (with 2016 update)
August 3, 2016:Nine years later, after running 24 hours a day in the summer and about half that in the winter, and having been dropped twice from a height of four feet onto a tile floor a few years ago, my trusty 733 is still (literally) humming along. The clips that hold the grill cracked off the second time it was dropped, but $25 (shipping included) for a new replacement grill has restored it to like-new condition.I just love the fan's sound. At any speed, the Vornado 733 sounds smoother than other brands, more whirring than windy. On low I can't really hear it at all, on medium it's easy to hear TV and noises from other rooms even when the fan is only a few feet away, and on high the sound is pretty loud, but low pitched enough that it's not annoying.Fan size matters, whether it's made by Vornado or not. A small fan on high is louder than a larger fan on low blowing the same amount of air, but the small fan won't keep the air in as small a stream or move it as fast. or as far. You'll simply be happier with a fan that's large enough to do the job quickly and quietly on low or medium speed. To get the most out of a Vornado fan, you need to understand how it works and experiment with placement and direction. As advertised, the fan can circulate the air to equalize the temperature in a single room, usually by putting it in one corner and pointing it at the ceiling in the corner diagonal from it, or, in a smaller room, by simply pointing the airflow straight up at the ceiling or at an opposite wall. You can also use it to throw air from one area of your home to another, whether it's to blow air upstairs, downstairs, or straight into a problem room. For example, my 733 spends the first hour of the day sending air 40 feet from the living room window A/C to the far end of my stuffy kitchen; the rest of the day it circulates living room air by bouncing it against the ceiling above the kitchen door, while a smaller Vornado keeps the cool air moving into the kitchen.Original review July 4, 2007:I've had the old classic 210 with variable speed for five or six years to circulate window air conditioning in my big L-shaped living room. I'm buying this one to blow cool air from one bedroom to another at night so I don't have to carry the other one around when I go to bed. This one is virtually identical to the 210, except it's 3 speed and only has 3 positions. But I have finally figured out that I don't need to pay infinitely variable speed or infinite positioning. The west side of my living room can reach 110 degrees or more in the afternoons. The only window I can put an A/C in faces the other side of the room. So I put the Vornado on the floor near the A/C and aim it so that the compact air stream hits the stream of air from the A/C and blows it to the hot end of the room. I'm astonished at how well this works. The rest of the year, when I'm not using the A/C, I use it like a ceiling fan by aiming it straight up. This baby really can throw air all over the place in a compact stream. They're right when they call it an air circulator. On low pointing it directly at yourself is OK, but because of the narrow air stream it works best pointed at the ceiling or a nearby wall to cool you indirectly. It's very, very quiet at low settings. At medium it sounds like any fan; at high it is about as loud as any average fan at its high setting. But you only need it on high when you're really trying to move a lot of air quickly.Vornado fans are worth every penny. Not many products actually live up to their hype, but this one does. I can't wait to get the new one.

This fan has better air circulation on the lowest setting than the smaller ...
I live in a medium sized 1 bedroom apartment. I wanted a small fan. I originally bought a smaller, $40 Vornado fan and found that I had to turn it all the way up to circulate air in the room, which meant the fan made a lot of noise. I did some comparison research on the Vornado web site, and found that this fan (the 660 series) has the lowest "power consumed to air moved" ratio of any other Vornado fan, meaning this is the most energy efficient fan that Vornado makes, so I returned the small fan and traded up for this fan. This fan is much larger than what I thought I needed (and twice the price of the $40 fan I was looking at). This fan has better air circulation on the lowest setting than the smaller fan did on the highest setting. Since I'm using a lower fan setting, this fan is very quiet. Plus I have the option of turning it up all the way if I really want to move some air.The directional focus of the fan works as advertised. I put the fan in one corner of the room, and can literally feel a column of air at the opposite corner of the room. The circulation of the fan works as advertised. I can feel the fan drawing air in from the sides when I stand to one side of the fan. When I first turned the fan on, it was on a high shelf, and it drew up dust bunnies from the floor and spat them out. The temperature in the room feels more balanced. The AC doesn't seem to run as often (I'm writing this in the middle of the July 2010 heat wave in DC). There are no hot spots or cool spots in the room. I feel cooler, having a constant, subtle flow of air around me.I'm very happy with this fan. This is one product that works as advertised and so far it has been worth every penny. I move it between the living room and the bedroom every day, and I will likely buy another one of these fans soon.

Choose Your Vornado Fan & Other Fans for Their Intended Purpose
Choose Your Vornado Fan & Other Fans for Their Intended Purpose --- by taking time to research and understand what each will and will not do.Vortex Circulation --- This fan moves air in a single direction, and can be position so the air in a single room is circulated. Additionally this fan will do a good job in moving air from one room to another room. Why would one want to do this? If you have a window or portable air conditioner in one room and would like to move the cooler air to another adjacent room this is a good prospect for you. While the technical claim is that it will move air 100 feet, my experience is that you can easily feel the air moving between 20 and 25 feet.Whisper Quiet --- On low and medium this is a very quiet fan and on high it is acceptable quiet too.3 Speeds --- low (which is very slow), medium (which is medium), and high (which is at its maximum)Multi-directional Airflow --- this feature works well and is an interesting concept. One just sets it down so it blows straight up, at a 45 degree angle, or a 90 degree angle as shown. No adjustments and all have a useful purpose.Easy to Clean --- Yes. I would also suggest an inexpensive furnace filter to place behind the fan, either this one or a box fan that can be placed in a window to draw air into your home. One may find that a 20 by 20 inch box fan with a 20 by 20 inch furnace filter behind it will be the best choice in a window. The furnace filter will keep the box fan relatively clean and remove a significant amount of debris from the air and will need to be changed every month or two.5 Year Warranty --- Time will tell about the need for this. It is made in China. The design is well thought out and the price is set high compared to other fans.In summary --- The information provided by the manufacturer could be more helpful in explaining the differences in these fans. "Buyer Beware." Think through carefully the purpose for your fan. Box fans can be found at much less of a price, yet, these VORNADO fans when you choose the right one for your job will likely be a better choice in many applications. You will just pay the top dollar for its benefits and features. My big important point --- The stated fan air moving in distance in my opinion and experience is over stated for practical value. At best my experience in feeling the air move stops at a maximum of 1/3 of this company's stated distance. Maybe a systems probe can measure at the claimed distances yet I cannot and I do have feeling in my hands. You will need to be the judge of this for yourself.Do you homework and you should make a wise purchase.
