Beautiful
Absolutely stunning book, just beautiful. I had got my eye on it for a long time to see if it came down in price, but it never did. Jam packed full of pictures, explanations and text, it is a joy to look at and read, so informative and useful.I got it because i love Trees. If i could live in the woods and never be disturbed, i would happily do it. Trees are not solitary beings, they are all connected via their roots. They keep growing until they reach each other. They also speak to each other and have their own frequency, we just cant hear it. I find that really quite fascinating.

Nice coffee table book, but reads a bit like a kids' encyclopaedia
DK books look a million times nicer than they used to, and this large hardback on trees is no exception. It has a really clear contents panel, showing the book split into three sections. The first, "How Trees Work", moves from the evolution of trees through to their various environments. There are then sections on non-flowering and flowering trees. Each type of tree has 2-6 pages dedicated to it, featuring everything from basic details on how to identify the tree, through to background on where they are found, their appearances in art and culture, and their development through the seasons. It is an interesting book, but it does feel a bit like a kids' encyclopaedia on the inside, so perhaps not one for anyone already knowledgeable about trees.

A Nature Lover's Delight
Another beautiful DK book combining gorgeous photography with interesting facts about the trees of the world. The opening chapter is short (28 pages), but packed with an excellent range of articles about how trees work, their evolution and how humans have made use of them throughout our development. The rest of the book is split between 17 species of non-flowering trees, such as ginko, redwood, spruce and fir, and 63 flowering species, such as magnolia, oaks, banyan and mango. As always this book is beautiful to look at, with some very interesting information, but with only a page or two at most for each tree (most of which will be taken up with photographs and illustrations), it will never be a comprehensive read. However, it is a visual delight for all natural world fans and I really appreciated the wide geographical range of species from all continents, not just the familiar native European and North American trees that are trotted out time and again. That doesn't mean that perennial favourites are forgotten, the coast redwood, giant sequoia, yew, silver birch, hawthorn, rowan, ash, beech and oak are all here, but there's also the Queen sago, kauri, totara, kapok, silver wattle, tree rhododendron, neem, river red gum and cinchona tree to name but a few. Throw in plenty of fruit and other crop plants that are important to modern life and this book should have a tree to interest anyone. Another winner from DK and one I shall enjoy dipping in and out of for years to come.

Beautiful and Informative Book
This is a wonderful book with beautiful photos and great information. This is part of the Smithsonian Collection and every one of these books is fantastic. As you can see from my photos, each page is laid out very well, with easy-to-read text, and fantastic pictures. These books are for anyone....from younger children to grandparents. My only suggestion to Amazon when shipping these beautiful books is to wrap them in bubble wrap or some protective material to ensure the books arrive in great condition with no dings or rub marks from just being placed in a box with no protective wrap. Most of these books do arrive in good condition, but a little more protection would be appreciated. THANKS and Cheers!

Tree portraits as fine art
This book is more than its title says: The Stories, Science, and History of Trees. It is also a gallery of tree portraits. Every part of the book is very nicely illustrated but also very soundly documented. In particular, the tree portraits are not mere tree pictures. Indeed, the book is full of nice pictures, but each tree portrait shows its botanical portrait, as details of the tree leaves, flowers and seeds, or vignettes of other species in the same genus, and also its social portrait, as its economical role, or its place in popular culture. It is a book for all tree lovers, be they amateurs, students, or botanists.
