Slow and Steady Wins the Race
I'll come back to this review after a longer period of use, but I've owned this mill now for almost a month and have used it daily. I'd keep in mind you have to compare apples to apples here when considering a mill to purchase. This does not compete with all the electronic hand-crank blends out on the market (I've seen many friends with them). Or even the exclusively smaller hand-crank mills. And it's not really designed too. This is a solid workhorse one reasonable step down from strapping an animal to drive the cranking. If you're serious about milling flour for your household, and are willing to put in the time to do so, then this is a fantastic mill that will likely last you a lifetime. Now, as to specifics. It definitely takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it I'd expect everything will take some time to grind. Flour in particular takes a decent amount of cranking to create a cup of flour. May be the difference of a few minutes of electronic grinding to 10-20 minutes of hand cranking. You have to be methodical about how much you put in at a time and if you overdo it you're just pushing wheat berries right back out without properly grinding them. But the flour that you get out on the other side is less fine as what you're probably used to, but it tastes amazing and is easy to work with. Definitely tastier than the wheat flour that a steel mill produces, which I had before. There is a difference! The cranking is also relatively seamless after you develop a rhythm. It takes almost no effort, but requires plenty of repetition. Remember, this is stone on stone, and adjust your expectations accordingly. But if you want real flour with maximum nutrition not grinded to a pulp by a steel machine, this is how you have to do it! Our bread has never tasted better! There are a minimal amount of parts (really just the handle), so the likelihood of something breaking a few years from now is minimal if you take care of the stone. Which is hard to say for most things these days. I got the medium sized mill (8.66 x 13.8 in.) as well, and that seems to work for everything just fine (including flour). The stand was much more solid than the picture seemed to indicate. I don't foresee any stand issues for many years to come. The mill also has a great rustic look up on the counter (or table in my case). Easy to clean as well with some water because of there being such a small amount of parts. No scrubbing behind difficult to reach areas. As for the company (StonePlus), they were on top of the sale and even with some shipping issues (it is coming from across the world to me here in the United States) they adjusted and made everything right. So far, I'm a happy customer and I've already recommended this mill to others. Can't get a more solid household mill than this. And to top it all off, it's actually kind of fun! I just put some wheat berries nearby every day and each member of the household just cranks some when they walk by (children included).
