Exceptional resource
I can't recommend this book highly enough! I have scoured the internet (including what several speech and language pathologists recommended) for practical resources to help my communication-delayed child and I found this book to be BY FAR the best resource. I appreciate that they break down communication stages so you can identify where your child is and then provides specific examples for each stage. They include a lot of examples with pictures that help you understand the suggestions they are making, many of which are more subtle changes so the pictures help a lot. I have seen significant improvement in my child's communication capabilities after implementing these recommendations, which I am incredibly grateful to have. I am now exploring other books they have released, which I also am finding helpful. While it may seem expensive for a paperback book, it is 100% worth it for the content - it actually works! I couldn't be more appreciative of this practical guide to enhance child communication.

I have a 2.5 yo daughter who used to avoid eye contact, never answered to her name, and hadn't pick up any words even by her second birthday. We went to a developmental specialist who told us that she may be autistic. Since then, she's been undergoing occupational and speech therapy and has been progressing in leaps and bounds in her interaction and talking. As speech therapy must also be continued at home, this book has been an invaluable instruction manual for me. As a 'director' parent, the best lesson I learnt from the book is letting your child lead by focusing on what he or she likes to do and building their vocabulary on that activity. I also solved many mysterious sounds she made by following another tip where you get physically down to her level, and imitate the sound until you realize what she's trying to say.If you want to improve your interaction with your child and use a proven method of teaching to help your child speak, do not hesitate to buy this book. Even if your child is developing normally but you'd like some idea on how to inject vocabulary into your interaction with him or her, this is still the book to buy.I edited this review to add that this book can be used on its own without a course, contrary to what another reviewer mentioned. This book is a simple straightforward yet enlightening instruction manual for teachers or parents on how to get your child interested in speaking.

best book i have read for language development
This is the best book for developing your child's language skills that I have read. I have read many, many books however this is the only book I have read that helps you to understand what level your child is at in terms of communication and implement strategies to improve communication at their level. I have read many books that just list a series of activities you can play with your child however this book goes beyond merely listing activities. This book helps you to understand your child and the developmental stage they are at in terms of play and communication. This helps you to see opportunities in your everyday interaction with your child that you can implement to improve their language skills.I highly recommend this book even on its own without taking the course. The book is very simple to read and has many great examples of how to implement the strategies they suggest.

Overpriced but Good Advice
I thought this book was well laid out and a good practical synthesis of the advice we have been given by speech therapists this far. I do feel like it was missing something I was hoping for mostly, what to do when your child's understanding is way beyond their verbal abilities. They do say in the beginning that when they talk about "words" they mean signs as well as spoken words. My daughter primarily communicates by sign and has very, very little verbal language though her understanding is age appropriate. I found it difficult to implement some of the advice given because her "category" seemed to assume a larger verbal repertoire than she has. I am still finding it difficult to find ways to connect and encourage more communication when her turn taking and imitation of us is still minimal even though she understands us. However, there definitely great takeaways in general and I'm hoping they help some.

It works!!!!!!!!!!!
This book provided me peace of mind and guided me on how to properly use all the tactics to help my child. After thirty minutes of reading this book, I started putting the information read into effect. My three year old said a new word in those first thirty minutes. This book has not only helped my child, but it has also helped me as a parent to have patience and to understand that my child will talk at her own pace. I had many fears, and this book has helped me to understand how to deal with them and help my child with her speech. Thank you!!!!

Must read for every parent
Best book ever for parents of late talking kids. Absolute must read for every parent dealing with this issue. Very down to earth the most helpful book from all ( and I think I read every book available on the subject ) Very common sense advice and technics described, so simple and so efficient , truly helped me and my Son. Just watch and "listen" what child is "telling" you , even without words amazing how much they "tell" us if we are willing to "hear" them. I wish i read this book first before newly created histeria books about possible this and that without any practical advice. Some kids just speak later then others and that's it.

Practical and user friendly
This books guides one through understanding what type of communicator one’s child is, what role one can play to best facilitate language growth, and which strategies one can use in everyday interactions. Speech therapy becomes part of everyday routine and that works best! The book ends with very practical ideas for boosting language during playtime, book reading time and singing time.
