Q: How long can you keep the ants like this? Do they have to be released? Does the colony die?

Should last 2-3 years before colony may need more space. Queens/colonies can live up to 20 years. Just make sure you put a straw in when setting up so that you can easily hydrate the bottom of the nest every now and then. As for release into wild, depends on the species, if its a native species, release not a problem, but if not native, not recommended to release, so you may need to find another collector to take them from you when you no longer want them.

Yes it comes with queen and ants.

Yes. It comes assembled. You only have to add the sand, the decoration items and the ants. All is included. The manual is included as well.
