Magical art
I first saw the art work of Jackie Morris on Facebook, where she is a friend of a friend. I was immediately struck by the love of nature that comes through in her precise, yet dreamy, illustrations. I especially like in this book that on some pages, the human characters are tiny and well off to the side, while the animals take center stage. This is a particularly charming tale about overcoming the threat of violence with music. I would love to see Jackie illustrate a book I bought in Ireland years ago when my son, now 37, was perhaps 12. It's called "The Hounds of the Morrigan" and I'll bet she is one of the few who could make the verbal pictures come to life!Picture books are real treasures, especially when illustrated by real artists. I look forward to curling up with my grandchildren (even the big ones!) and reading them this book!I'd like to point out that, though my husband's name appears at the top on this review, I, Sue Yurick, am the one writing it!

"She Sang..."
Jackie Morris is one of my favourite illustrators, creating lush and vibrant watercolors that illuminate an array of naturalistic and magical scenes. “The Song of the Golden Hare” is a quintessential picture book from this artist, combining a dreamy story with her beautiful pictures. The young boy and his sister have a family secret that’s been handed down for generations: that the hares that live on the moors occasionally come together in an attempt to win the affection of the Golden Queen of the Hares, before she makes her journey to the island off the coast where she’ll be safe from hunters and hounds. It’s a simple story, but a memorable one, and Morris’s illustrations accurately capture the appearance and movement not just of the hares, but other creatures (foxes, owls, hounds) that fill her pages. Every page contains a double-spread depicting the sweeping countryside, with animals in the foreground but also a myriad of wonderful details in the background: houses, trees, people – all of which lends her pictures a real sense of scope and scale. For example, one page has the hares frolicking in the foreground while the topmost left-hand corner depicts the ominous figure of the hunter – too far away to pose any immediate threat, but growing in size and nearness as the pages go on.With intricate detail and rich colors, the illustrations alone are worth the price of any Jackie Morris book, but this story of love, danger, and the mysterious lives of animals make “The Song of the Golden Hare” a particular gem.
