Can this set be modified to use the standard train motor set so this train can run on the Lego tracks?

In theory, yes, but the modifications required would extend well beyond the mere addition of a motor. This set was not really designed to be 'run', so much as 'displayed'. There's no turning bogeys on this set, which makes taking corners without derailing impossible. Also, *all* of the normal wheels are brick-built, which makes operating it on a track very difficult. You're looking at a major rebuild with lots of parts replacement *and* redesign of the wiring that illuminates this set to make it a functional locomotive, along with probably the addition of a second scratch-built car in order to house the power supply unless you opt to use an older power-over-rails type setup.

What age is this for? I'm buying for my 10 year old nephew?

I would say 10 is a perfect age for this, if your nephew is into building sets. It will take a little time committment to put together, so patience is key, but skill-wise it is certainly possible for a 10-year-old, or an attentive 8-year-old for that matter.

Is it compatible with Lego tracks?

You need to measure the width of the wheels and see, but mine is just for display , I had to glue quite a few parts on mine, These are not Lego quality fitment
