Q: The pumps suddenly stopped working. Is there anything you recommend I try to do to fix it?

Mine has always work, can you hear the motor trying to run, might have plastic or debris in the pump

Q: Can this switch between hot and cold efficiently or how does that work?

Switching between hot and cold is a manual process. This unit does have a heating element, so it will heat and maintain hot water. It's better to fill it with already hot water, as it will take some time to heat it up on its own. But if you want cold therapy, you would need to drain it and refill it with cold water with ice added if desired. You would have to add more cold water/ice as time goes on, as this unit does not have a way to chill water, only to heat it. Hope that helps!
