The amazing 2part album for GNR. A must have for fans
This is by far a progressive step forward in the GNR album world & the music world. As a kid i grew up listening to my moms cassette tapes of Appetite & Lies so as i grew up i always had an appreciation for GNR & the 80s punk & metal scene(Motley Crue,Metallica,Kiss, etc.) So as i got older my taste got heavier and i developed a liking for Pantera,Eyehategod,Skinless,SFU,etc. Back to the album, the band changed the lineup a bit as they added Dizzy Reid on the keys & Matt Sorum on the drumkit. This album is a 2 part piece broken into 2 volumes,vol.1 or Illusion 1 is more on the line of in your face punk, blended with the new direction of 9 minute epic songs that are pretty much like opera(in the sense of tragedy & the rise of their searing guitar solos and piano interludes. The band is tight, they pull off some fast paced hard rocking tracks such as Right Next Door to Hell,Perfect Crime,Bad Obsession,Back off Bitch,Double Talkin' Jive,Garden of Eden,Don't Damn Me,Bad Apples & Dead Horse. Those are your more fast-paced tracks with the punkish attitude and the Appetite tracks, then you have the epic songs that are more constructed like Dust & Bone,Live and Let Die(Paul McCartney cover)Don't Cry,You Ain't the First,November Rain,The Garden, and the epic closer Coma. I divided the songs based on the slower songs and the faster songs because they are 2 completley different sides of the spectrum. The band really pulls it off here with this gem,but to really appreciate the album as a whole you just have to have both volumes & play them back to back to get the full feel of the concept behind it. There is everything here from bluesy driven guitar solos from Slash & Izzy holding down the rhythm,Duffs bass is nice and audible on this album and he holds it down nice with Matt. Axl's voice is screaming and then his calm lows are perfectly in tune with the keys. Some of my favorite tracks on here are Dust & Bones,Don't Cry,You Ain't the First,Bad Obsession,Back off B***h,Double Talkin Jive,November Rain,The Garden,Bad Apples & Coma.Trust me this album is killer, all in all the band is wicked solid and from start to finish it is a musical genius of an album. I have heard so many great bands and so many great albums that range from every side of the spectrum, and this is an amazing album.

Rock and a Hard Place
The Gunners were never a Metal or a Hair band, OK they did have the hair. They were and are a Hard Rock band drawing on influences as wide ranging as Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, The Stones, American Punk Rock with a sound in the late 80's & early 90's which was uniquely their own. I purchased the CD box set version for the two full live albums. I own the original CD's & LP's of Illusion 1 ans 2 from when they were first issued, so I found the remastered copies redundant...not much difference in sound from my first copies.Opted for the CD box to get two FULL gigs, I don't enjoy the 'cut and paste' approach one live albums so passed on different but cheaper 2 double CD issues. The 'stuff & fluff' that comes with the box is largely meaningless, although the book is fine.Of the live albums the Ritz gig is the better of the two as Izzy Stradlin was still around and his guitar playing limited Slash's at times endless noodling. That plus the rough & ready nature of this smaller gig is essential Gunners listening. The second concert, & it is a concert as opposed to a gig, finds Izzy gone & is probably somewhat more like they sound today. I saw them a few years ago and apart from Axl's voice being not what it used to be, this is much the same as what you'd get if you saw the 'never-ending tour' now.I think they a great Rock band & if like me you prefer your music live, buy it!As an aside I passed on the vinyl set as it is way over priced.

Best Album(s) of all time
I can't even begin to say how much I love these albums (i just picked UYI 1 to write my review for both). Everyone always says that Appetite is Guns best album...no way in hell. The Illusion albums are so much richer. Now don't get me wrong, I love appetite but it is more of a party album with cool guitar work and catchy tunes. The illusion twins are just so much deeper lyrically and have many more styles woven in and out of a hard rock framework.I can identify with so many of axls lyrics, and the music just makes them stand out so much more. Slash is basically the best hard rock guitar player ever, and he has more awesome solos and leads on these albums than most guitar players have in a career. And the best part about these albums is that the lesser known songs are usually the best, such as: Locomotive, Bad Apples, Dont Damn Me, The Garden, Pretty Tied Up, Coma, Civil War, Get in the Ring, Breakdown, Estranged (kind of popular but still fairly unknown) 14 Years, Bad Obscession, Dust n Bones, Dead Horse, and more. Then of course there are the hits, Dont Cry, November Rain, Knockin on Heavens Door, Live and Let Die, You Could Be Mine etc.The only songs i dont really like that much are My World (wtf?) and shotgun blues, but everything else is just so gdamn good. Do yourself a favor and go buy these albums if u consider yourself a hard rock fan. The illusion albums are art, plain and simple.
