possibly when it's open but when folded in half (closed) it's about half the size of a4 paper

Excellent and fits well. However, each bit requires use of the extension, which takes away from the compactness in small spaces.

Fewer explosions

Most bits sooner or later explode. I’ve had other Makita ones that disintegrated quickly and it often seems random which ones do and which ones don’t.This product has not exploded and one or two bits have had extreme use which I undertook armed with bit replacements which I never needed.
