A worthwhile investment for macro (or portrait) photography.
This is a specialist unit, designed (very well) to carry out a couple of specific tasks, both of which it does very well. Most of the "decent" 3rd-party ring-flash units on the market come in at not much short of the cost of this one, so I took the decision to go with the genuine Canon unit, rather than go after-market; I'm glad I did. With a Guide Number of just 14, this certainly not a "powerful" flashgun intended to throw light a large distance - it's neither designed, nor intended, to. What it is designed to do is to illuminate the subject without any shadows (most after-market units use 2 sets of LED's to reduce cost, which result in images with multiple shadows, each partially filled in by the light from the nearby LED, so not as shadow-free as the Canon flash-based solution). As this unit is designed to allow fitting to a range of lenses, there is no adapter supplied - one has to be purchased separately for the lens diameter in use. I agree with comments from other reviewers that the Canon versions of these adapters (Canon Microlite Adapter 67C for EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens seem massively over-priced for what they are, however, they are metal and not plastic, as some of the cheaper versions are, so hold the £400 flash firmly on the end of the lens - a small price to pay for this re-assurance.Bottom-line - would I recommend this unit? Yes, the build quality is certainly up to Canon standards and it works very well indeed with the Canon 100mm Macro IS lens. Canon EF 100 mm F 2.8 L Macro IS USM Lens - Black

Expensive but worth it.
Very good quality. Bought this to replace a cheaper Yongnuo ring flash that didn’t fire every time and the battery compartment cover catch broke, so it had to be held closed with elastic bands (typical failure for that device). It’s easy to use. I’ve tried it in manual and TTL modes and both worked well. The cycle time between shots has been good and I’ve taken well over 200 shots on one set of batteries. May just seem economical as the flash is invariably firing at less than 100% of the Power. I’ll see how it is after a few more uses but so far I’m really pleased with it. It was expensive but I want a long term use, quality flash for macro.

would've given it 5 stars but it was quite expensive.
Love it, I pondered sometime before buying it but I've not found anything wrong with this purchase, not stopped using it since.

great flash
great flash well worth the money great results the only problem if you use a 2.8 100 mm l macro lens you have to buy a 67mm ring to fit lens
