Right number of words per page
Bought this for my 28 month old and he loves it. The stories are "traditional" - that is, they come complete with a little implied injury to the villains that seems to appeal to my toddler, the wolf ends up in the cooking pot in the three little pigs and filled with rocks at the end of little read riding hood (although I thought that was the end wolf and the seven little kids). The best thing about it is that it seems to have the right number of word per page. It's on par with "I really want to eat a child" (another modern classic), slightly fewer than the Gruffalo but more words and plot than "That's not my...". So there's no skipping lines because the pictures have got boring. And there's usually enough story in the pictures that if there are too few words, you can talk about the pictures as well. My toddler is already quoting it we've read it so often and the whole book in one sitting is not an arduous task. Maybe not the best bedtime read as it can be a little exciting but there's the "bedtime" edition in this series for that.

Updated fairy stories
I bought this book to read to my three year old twin granddaughters. Their favourite story is 'Little Red Riding Hood'. In this version the wolf does eat Granny and has stones put into his abdomen as in the original Grimms story, but Little Red Riding Hood is taking Granny Brussels sprout soup and the wolf ends up a vegetarian. The girls quite like the book but much preferred a traditional nursery rhyme book that I bought at the same time. They don't like the Usborne illustrations. However, my six year old grandson does like it - especially 'The Frog Prince' in which the princess throws the frog out of the window, he goes 'splat' and then she kisses him better. The stories are the right length for bedtime. I will probably buy a more traditionally illustrated book of fairy stories that contains 'Cindrella' for the girls.

Good Bedtime Reading
When we bought this it was required bedtime reading for two weeks without a break. The five stories have been tamed a little to make it suitable for little kids. We don't really read Twelve Dancing Princesses at all. However, the other four get a lot of reading, although Red Riding Hood is the closest there is to the actual story so may not be always suitable for the youngest ones (my daughter is 2 so we tend to avoid that one). However, its well illustrated, not got too many words and allows you to ad lib bits to flesh it out and make it different each time. Recommended

Perfect for toddlers
Both my kids (3 and 2 years old) love this book. The fairy tales are perfect for toddlers with a lot of pictures and they are not too long so they don't get bored or distracted before the end of the story.

Only a few stories
I was expecting a lot more of the well-know fairy tales to be in the book. Too few stories for the size and price of the book. I suggest the book's description includes the titles of the stories in the book.
