comparable to ingmar bergman
i've given this film five stars because i liked it. i think some other people might find it boring because of its pace and, although it is laugh out loud in many parts, if you can't sympathise with the main characters then you won't appreciate the story.banshees is set in 1923 on an island called inisherin off the coast of mainland ireland. two blokes who have been friends for a long time suddenly fall out, and the plot is centered around this. i won't spoil things by telling you much more: maybe it's best to just watch the film and judge for yourself.there are echoes of several of ingmar bergman's works such as "cries and whispers", "the seventh seal" and "winter light". inisherin is depicted as a pretty bleak place for all the scenery is beautiful and the irish accents are lush. there is depression, bizarre behaviour, despair, self mutilation, horror, death and morbidity featured, aswell as sardonic humour and hope. it is a film that needs to be taken in slowly to see its genius, like bergman's.so, if you admire ingmar bergman movies, you'll find "the banshees of inisherin" entertaining.

A really different movie, but give it a go.
I real liked this film , my wife didn’t like it maybe it’s because she is from a small village in Ireland. Its about a break down of a friendship, it’s pretty brutal in places , but give it a go well acted as well.

Martin McDonagh's lockdown movie?
Those who are aware of the writer/director's other work know what to expect in terms of content and this movie certainly does not disappoint. The action is set a century ago on an island off the west coast of Ireland: the civil war which followed on from independence from Britain forms a backdrop without being explicitly portrayed, though it is one possible (unstated) reason why Padraic (Colin Farrell) suddenly "decides" to end his friendship with Colm (Brendan Gleeson).I've called this a "lockdown movie" because there are only a few subsidiary characters. These are well portrayed by the chosen actors and the performances of the principals are outstanding, Farrell's cantakerous portrayal especially so. Tension increases gradually but inevitably towards the apocalyptic ending. The settings are almost a cariacture of the poor rural Ireland of the period and lend credibility to the movie experience. There is strong language throughout and violent scenes which might upset some people, despite which I rate this movie very highly. The version I bought on BluRay has neither foreign language dubbings (Irish Gaelic would have been appropriate) nor subtitles other than "English for the hearing impaired" and many buyers might appreciate a featurette putting rural Western Ireland of 100 years ago into context, hence I'm awarding 4 stars rather than 5.
