Q: What is this used for and how should you use it?

it can be used for solar cooking. There are many videos - just take care - the focal point will become very hot.

Q: Can I use this as a solar blowtorch?

Yes you can. How ever the bigger the surface area the hotter the fresnel lens will be. It also takes very very steady hands so making a frame for it at the optimum hight which will take some experimentation is the best way to make a solar torch. Just make sure the frame in which the lens sits can swivel around and you’ll get there. The glass lenses are the best though if you can find them as those never get cloudy like plastic lenses do over time and there more optically clear but the lenses out of old projector TVs are the best as those are huge if you can find them but they are plastic though but you can very easily melt steel, rock or any material with those things. Q: What is the magnification? Can it be used for reading?

I don't think it would be suitable for reading. It has to be held away from the object and is quite large and heavy. Magnification is x 3.
