These are good clamps. The clamping surface is approximately 1/4" wide and maybe 2mm thick. Small teeth that intermesh are on the surface. There is some play between the two interlocking pieces but overall they teeth improve the grip. The clamping end is perpendicular to the axis of the handle. If you hold the clamp's tip perpendicular to a surface the clamping plane is horizontal to the surface. The clamping area is only at the distal tip, unlike a hemostat which is serrated along the length of the clamping tip. This makes it easy to lightly close the clamp on the area where the tick is attached to the skin. You want to get as close to the skin as possible without crushing the tick. A fine needle tipped forceps may be better to get it as near to the ticks mouth parts but this works well on a dog that is fussing. After the tick is removed, If available, i place the tick in kleenex or TP and smash it with a rock, Remember, that ticks can carry disease causing bacteria and virus. Wash up forceps and skin bite site and hands well. Wipe skin with alcohol and soak forcep tips in ethanol 70%.

Bought after having to take a goat 3 hrs away to the vet in the middle of the night. Urinary blockage, stones. Tried and tried to fish out his pizzle at home. The vet was able to do it with these clamps. Now I have a set that will hopefully save me a trip next time!
