Its a Star, Anise.
Half a teaspoon along with 1/2 teaspoon Balsamic, 1 teaspoon each of soy sauce and Worcester sauce added to a bed of leeks, onions, carrots and anything else in the veg line lazing away in the fridge a good glug of water, pop your piece of Brisket on top, tin foil for 3 hours low temp remove foil for 4th hour, you will enjoy, better still with fuel prices as they are us your slow cooker. If you want tasty bbq, use this.
I recently came back from the middle East, where this is on the shelf of every supermarket. Here, not at all. It is essential for bbq ribs and pork belly. Gives much more flavour to food than using a Star.

Wonderful flavour
I just love this. I cannot use cinnamon, but star anise is the acceptable alternative that causes me no ill-effects. It tastes even better than cinnamon.
