Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was one of the most singular and distinctly American bands. Beyond the West Coast rock/folk jangle, San Francisco psychedelia and a blast of British invasion, the South's influence was a constant throughout Petty's songwriting - in his words, truths and especially his defiance and dignity. Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty draws on all the aspects and flavors of the Gainesville-raised icon's roots, bringing the top talent in Country and Americana music together to create a 20-song tribute to Petty's dynamic musical legacy.

great country artists, performing great tom petty songs
This was a great tribute to Tom Petty by some of today's best country artists. I really appreciated the covers that each artist chose. It is hard for me to listen to a cover of another artist, but they did it very respectfully.

Joyful Tribute
Sure, I could nitpick and cite a couple of tracks as being underwhelming, but most of this album is packed with great song after song (okay, they are Tom Petty songs, but still ... ) that I can't bring myself to give it a lower rating than 5 stars. And these joyful cover versions deserve the acclaim, and your attention.A few of the big names on here are favorites; tracks by the likes of Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and a live George Strait version. My least favorite might be the opening track by Chris Stapleton, an artist who I normally like a lot. But my sleeper pick for favorite track might be the version of "Here Comes My Girl" by Justin Moore (Amazon's track listing above is incorrect). His delivery is just so sincere and heartfelt, and so darn "country" that you can't help but love it! Kudos also to the Dierks Bentley version of "American Girl" and the Brothers Osborne's take on "I Won't Back Down." Turn it up!Honestly, everyone will have their own favorites. I was initially wary of purchasing this CD, but I am VERY glad that I did. This one is a definite keeper!

Good, but it's no Tom Petty.
I bought this thinking it would be nice to hear these artist's interpretations of TP songs. It is good, but I could not help but thinking "I'd rather hear the original version". Tom was a master at making records, so in fairness, what can one do to make the song better? Nothing, so you just have to make it different. I am a huge Marty Stuart fan, and his band covers "I Need to Know". I probably bought it for that reason alone. Now, there is nothing wrong with their version, but Tom was was in his twenties when it was recorded, so his voice has such an honest urgency in it, that simply is not there in Marty's version, and understandably so. I can say the same thing for American Girl. Anyway, it is good for what it is, but is it necessary - that's up to you?

A great collection of country artists performing classic Tom Petty hits.
What a pleasure it is to hear these great artists pay homage to the incomparable Tom Petty. You can hear the excitement in their voices to be covering these timeless songs. I grew up listening to his music and totally took it for granted at the time. Like it was completely normal and routine to hear these finely crafted songs. Never taking the time to really listen to the subtle lyrics and unique sound, assuming the sound and the man himself would be around forever. For the casual observer, such as myself, it is only upon reflection and revisiting the body of work does the genius become obvious. This tribute album makes the timeless quality of his music even more obvious as these artists breathe new life into these hit songs with such zeal and talent it feels like hearing them for the first time. A personal favorite is the hard-hitting rendition of Refugee by Wynonna Judd and Lainey Wilson.

Makes me Miss Tom
The songs aok and song selections.I tried to like this snd the idea of this but all these songs sung country style just make me wish Tom Petty was alive. Also, how can this NOT have a single cut by LUCINDA WILLIAMS who was on his final tour. Her impassioned single all about Petty “Stolen Moments”, is just short of a miracle. And she has a full cd/vinyl of Petty’s songs! (Runnin' Down a Dream: A Tribute to Tom Petty). Travesty.
