Good Beginner Sourdough Kit, Instructions Possibly Misleading
For reference, I received this kit on March 14th and the pictures I attached were taken on April 3rd.The jar itself is true to size, and almost everything that comes with it is as described and works well. I will say that the sticker thermometer had a pretty faint show over the temperature and if you ever wanted to put the jar in the dishwasher or even just wash it in the sink, that sticker is not staying on. As you can see in the pictures I eventually just took it off. This kit was the first time I ever attempted a sourdough starter! It actually came with an instruction manual with the exact measurements and type of flour to use on each day and each feeding. It says to use whole wheat flour to start and for feedings, but I only used whole wheat the first day and unbleached (unbleached is important) all purpose the other days. You can also use AP flour to start with if you don't have any whole wheat flour. AP, whole wheat, and bread flour are all acceptable options. Now, that being said, at the end of the guide given with this kit, it says you will have a baking ready starter at day 7 or a full week. The day that I received this kit, on March 14th, was the day I made my starter. It's now April 3rd and it's the first day I've truly seen a significant rise that wasn't the "false rise" (bacterial activity) and you see on days 2 or 3. That means it's been almost exactly 3 weeks since beginning my starter. I would say in my humble opinion and from a lot of online research, you should not expect your starter to be ready in 7 days. Many sources and people say that 2 weeks is the minimum for a starter to have created a sufficient yeast colony to bake with. For some it might take even longer, like mine. As long as it doesn't continue to smell funky or rank after the first couple days, keep going! Good luck to everyone and happy baking! :)

Great value
A beginner sourdough baker here: For me this was a good little kit. I don't find myself using the temperature strip and it doesn't completely stick to the jar. Also, I prefer a plastic lid that I already have and in my dry climate the cloth top doesn't work for me. But the shape and size of the jars, the volume markings, as well as the spatulas and date/time band are worth it. I placed a label and wrote the weight of each jar on it (one was 400g and the other 404g). Now I can simply weigh the entire jar with the starter to calculate my feed ratios. I love the mason top because I add the water first, place the lid on and shake it vigorously to loosen any dry bits, then scrape the sides down to clean it up. I then add the flour and mix it in the bottom. I wipe off the top of the jar, rinse the lid and place it back on, loosening a quarter turn. This process keeps the jar really clean and easy to see the rise and my starter can rise without drying out. With this method I rarely have to wash the jars and I keep a countertop starter jar and fridge discard jar.

Very handy for starter mixing and storage.
Love the glass and markings make it easy to see when starter has doubled and has bubbles. Cloth lid great for breathing dough, and full lid great for refrigerator storage. Easy to use and durable. Easy to clean.

A great jar
I make potato flake sourdough. I love the 24 oz jar, screw on top, fabric top and spurtle. If I were to purchase this jar again, I would purchase one size larger. This jar allows works great for one cup of starter but is not large enough to feed a larger amount. I rated one less star because the thermometer strip does not work.

Starter containers
I use both containers for sourdough starter. The band around that help's letting me know the growth of your starter worked well. Containers work wonderfully. I do wish the string rods were slightly longer. They still worked well. Definitely buy again.

Love this jar for sourdough
I know you don't NEED a special jar for sourdough. But I LOVE this jar for sourdough. The smooth sides makes it so easy to clean and dump. The size allows for me to feed my sourdough and have plenty of room to grow.
