Perfect replacement for my 2003 H2
So I'll spend a little extra time with this purchase because sometimes the Interwebs lack any real content about certain repairs. First, this is an exact replacement with all the necessary fasteners for my 2003 H2. It comes with no instructions, which I realize now is because, while it probably fits all Hummers, the way Hummer built the rear lift gate changed at some point. In my 2003, I have screws outside the vehicle surrounding the plastic insert for the license plate, lighting, and handle. At some point, they removed those exterior fasteners in production and bolted the whole assembly from the inside. SO - if you see Phillips head screws all around your exterior assembly, unscrew those. They are only in the sides and bottom. Nothing is hidden in the top. You don't need to unscrew the license plate lenses etc. Gently pull the assembly out of the tailgate, it has four typical GM body clips which will unsnap if you're gentle, or break if you're rushing. If it seems difficult, somebody may have applied silicone or other sealant around the housing at some point and it may take a little more prying. If you DON'T see Phillips head screws on your exterior assembly, it is a later model with, I believe, 6 10mm nuts holding it on from the interior. To access these, start in the interior of the truck. Looking at the hatch from inside, you'll see a grab loop that's typically used to pull down the hatch. That has a single screw in it, which you can see by lifting up the loop. Remove that. Then gently, starting from the top, start to unclip the entire panel by pulling down slightly. This will remove the trim and you will then see the nuts to undo to pop the panel out. From that point, either way, its simple with some patience. Undo the cable and cylinder from the black clip, undo the marker light harnesses and the unit is free to carry to a work bench. There are two pins. One holds the handle in place, the other holds the moveable latch. Remove those, swap parts and spring, and reinstall. Everything I saw on Youtube said this takes three hours, I was done shy of 30 minutes. In terms of this particular part on Amazon, it arrived very fast, contained everything necessary to replace the handle and seems good quality. Time will tell. But its looking like a cheap home run!
