Musings from a Military Yoga Teacher
So, I've just finished reading the new release Yoga for Warriors by Beryl Bender Birch.First, let me just say that it is no secret how much I love Beryl. She is after all the first lady of Power Yoga! Years ago, her "Power Yoga: Total Strength and Flexibility Workout" was such an inspiration to my 1990’s body building and weightlifting weary body that I revived my yoga practice and never looked back. Her "Meditations for Everyday Mindfulness" was the first audio meditation I could ever stand to listen to without gagging over some pseudo-yogi-enlightened voice.I have buried myself in every book Beryl has written, fallen in love with, dedicated my practice to, and for more than 11 years now, taught this Astanga like system that allowed me the freedom to learn, explore and discover my true nature. Since returning stateside, I have attended every local opportunity and attempted to glean every bit of life wisdom she cares to impart. With all that being said, I have worked hard and seriously within the military community to acquire the recognition of this physically, mentally and spiritually healing practice. For 15 years I have taught yoga from base to base around the world and have publicly spoken out and strived toward bringing the practice of Yoga and Yoga Therapy to our servicemen and women in an official capacity. So, it is not lightly, nor in mere loyalty to this amazing woman, her inspiring life, dedicated practice or work with Give Back Yoga, that I say :"Yoga Warriors" fills an open chasm for military members and their families dealing with the effects and uncertainty of a chaotic active duty life. Now, more than ever, we need the benefits yoga can provide as a complimentary and sometimes, primary healing modality for reducing the effects of trauma, anxiety and stress faced by our military servicemen and women. This book is by far, the most comprehensive, most mindfully prepared and creatively accessible compilation on the competent use of yoga asana, pranayama and meditation for military members that has ever been drafted.Beryl’s newest release is a much needed beacon of light in the depths of a pain filled abyss shared across a multi-generational population of our armed services.Beryl generously delivers and shares her love for this practice to those who will never forget the gifts hidden within her voice, her actions or the words printed on her pages. In MettaYogaStine ॐhttp://www.yogastine.com/musings-from-the-mat

Practical, Innovative and Crisply Written
Few people are better qualified to write a book of this nature. Birch was one of the "first adapters" of Vinyasa (moving) Yoga when it came to America in the 1970s, and she has a high-profile track record of re-calibrating the practice for modern practitioners. This book needed to be written because yoga is so uniquely appropriate to the problems of post-traumatic stress (PTS) that many soldiers experience. Birch steers her insight, decades of experience and gift for the written word gainfully toward the subject to create a helpful and beautiful book that any needful yoga student--soldier or civilian--can make profitable use of.

Must have for veterans and teachers!
As a veteran, military spouse, and a yoga teacher, I can say that "Yoga For Warriors" is a must have for all veterans and yoga teachers. Like all of Beryl's other books, this one is written in her same down-to-earth style that you can relate to from the first page. Backed by years of research and experience, the simple yet complete guide she sets forth for beginning a yoga practice is accessible to anyone.
