Fence Vol. 1

Sports anime meets actual romance, and an amazing story
The moment where you see the greatest characters in sport stories and you ship them, but no, they're actually just really close bros, no homo?Yeah, I am happy that this isn't the case here, and on top of that, the story is so tight and well executed! And what made me extra happy was the diverse cast, I could cry out of sheer happiness. No regrets. Or maybe just one, that I didn't find out about this book sooner.

Fence leaves you needing more
I have been previously reading the fence novels on Comixology and really enjoying reading this way. I couldn't help feeling, however, that I might be missing out a little by not reading it the traditional way. Whilst it is nice to have a physical copy and it is good value, I have to say that I prefer the block by block reading I get through the Comixology app. The story and characters, however, are great and this instalment leaves you needing more.

Really enjoyable
I really enjoyed this, more than I thought I would. I’m not into fencing but this intrigued me. I love the illustrations and I really like the characters. I can’t wait to read the next one!

Fence Volume 1 Review
Book ReviewTitle: Fence: Volume 1 by C.S. PacatGenre: Graphic Novel, Sports, HumourRating: 4.5 StarsReview: I didn’t know much about Fence before getting into it other than it follows fencing. We are following Nicholas who is the illegitimate child of a retired fencing champion as he gets into the prestigious Kings Row private school. As this is a fairly short graphic novel my review isn’t going to be overly long but I wanted to read the comics before getting into the new full-length novels based off these comics.Nicholas comes from a very poor background and has always worked in exchange for free fencing lessons and he has finally been able to afford to enter the regional championships in order to get noticed and potentially get a scholarship to a good school. However, Nicholas has the unfortunate luck of being paired up against Seiji Katayama who is one of the best and currently remains unbeaten. Despite Nicholas attempts and secret heritage he loses 15-0 against Seiji and his hopes are dashed. However, Nicholas does get noticed by Kings Row Boys School, a private school and gets in on a scholarship but his scholarship depends on him getting on the fencing team. I am not sure if Nicholas is aware that Kyle one of the boys from the regional championship is related to his father but he freaks out when he realises that Seiji is going to be his roommate at Kings Row. Overall, the first instalment of Fence was interesting and I will definitely be reading more and I can’t be the only one to wish for a potential relationship between Seiji and Nicholas at some point in the future of the series.

Before starting this, I had been pretty sure I was going to like it, and would you look at that, I was correct. I loved the art style, and the characters, and how the entire cast was so diverse. The story interests me a lot - which is always good - and I really enjoyed the fact that it was based on fencing, as this is not normally a sport you see in books or graphic novels. This was quick and easy to read, and I am going to pick up Volume 2 right now.

Exaggerated and shallow characters
Exaggerated and shallow characters. I think they were supposed to be bullies to start with, so you don't feel sorry for them if they lose in the competition and the main character wins in the end. So blatantly obvious, but I would read the second volume in the series.
