Hi there! Thank you for your inquiry. This is 9 men's and 11 women's.

Q: Bought these - lots of room for toes at the top but my heel comes pretty much right to the back of the sandal - is that how they should be?

I found I have the choice of too much or too little at the back, depending on the size. I typically wear 8.5; or 39 Euro. I always size down on thong sandals because I don't want sloppy fit on flip flops. I found as I wore them, they fit better. Maybe the thong stretches a little (?) to allow toes to move forward.
