Perfect for a vegetarian version of a set cheesecake
I’ve been vegetarian for over 30 years, but I’ve never tried agar agar…back in the day, it’s sole use was to culture things on a Petri dish with! …so I was interested to be able to see how it would work in cookery. And since I love a cheesecake, this seemed a good way to trial it. The agar agar itself comes in a plastic tub, and is in the form of a fine granular powder. I found a veggie recipe for a set cheesecake online fairly easily, and for a large cheesecake I used 9g of the agar agar. It’s fairly easy to use- you heat it with a little water till it dissolves and thickens, and in this case I added it to heated cream, before beating it into a cream cheese, vanilla, and icing sugar mix. The resulting mixture thickened almost instantly- I just had time to pour it into the tin mould before it began to set, and after an hour or so in the fridge it was firm enough to demould cleanly. I’m really impressed with this - the agar itself is completely tasteless, and the resulting cheesecake had a lovely light, bouncy set texture. All in all, I’m so pleased I finally tried this- and will be using it as a thickener / dessert setter from now on.

Great for vegan baking
This Agar Agar powder arrived as described and looks just like the photos advertised.I had never heard of this before until I saw in a lot of vegan recopies it mentions it as a good thickening agent for many cakes, pies and more. It's a great replacement for gelatin and I've found it works just as good if not better, extra bonus no animals are harmed! This powder thickens up easily and you can pretty much use it in anything that you'd use gelatin for making it very versatile! I would recommend it!

Versatile thickener
I am reviewing Agar Agar Powder Organic 114g- 4oz Vegan Gelatin Substitute, 100% Pure Agar Thickener for Cooking and Petri Dishes, Jams - Rich in Dietary Fiber Gelatin Stabilizer for Jelly, Desserts, Vegan CheeseAs a long term vegetarian leaning towards vegan I get tired of being told that desserts 'don't have meat in them dear' when I ask if they are vegetarian. So many people have no idea what gelatin is. Spoiler - it's boiled bones. So when I got the chance to order this I was intrigued and pleased. As a scientist I've only used agar in petri dishes to grow moulds and things. This is a useful pack and can be used in Jellies, jams and so much more. I tried it in a trifle using it to thicken real fruit juice (raspberry). It's so much better than jelly and lets me keep everything natural, vegan and without loads of preservatives.

Quite Alright
This is a great thing to have - I did not have anything very 'strong' in the sense of jelly to make so cannot quite comment how it would work for a cake, for instance. But it works alright, you just need to find the proportion to achieve the effect you require. It does not really change the taste of the food you are preparing so is fine by me. Being organic is an additional bonus.

Perfect for Vegans
I have been experimenting with a vegan diet, and this is a great vegan option for gelatin in desserts. You can pretty much interchange the ingredients in a different ratio. It works really well for me in puddings and making cold desserts that I need to set. It comes with a 2-year shelf life as well.

Very versatile
Agar agar powder is a vegan substitute for gelatin. It is rich in dietary fibre and acts as a thickener, emulsifier, stabilizer, and gelling agent, so it is very versatile. This Agar agar is made from seaweed, it is suitable for many dietary needs including gluten-free diets, kosher, keto, as well as vegan diets. It arrives in a plastic pot and the lid has two opposite openings. One side for sprinkling the powder and the other for pouring. The screw top lid is easily removed if you prefer to use a teaspoon for measuring. There is no end of uses for this powder, jelly and puddings, ice creams and baking. I used it to make a vegan cheesecake and was very happy with the results. I used around two teaspoons for a whole cheesecake.Agar agar maintains its integrity at high temperatures, making it a good choice for baking. This is a handy store cupboard addition to my kitchen, as I have a vegan in the family. It is worth noting that this powder cannot be used with acidic foods, as it will alter its effect and the package says suitable for age 6 plus. I think the price is good for the amount in the pack. This quantity will last a very long time, especially as it has a shelf life of two years. It is good to know that it keeps well.

fingerprint inside jar put me off using it
The title of this product says this agar agar powder is organic, though there is no official organic stamp on this product anywhere, and in fact no-where on the box or bottle does it say it is organic, so I suspect it may not be truly certified to be organic. The product comes in a plastic (PET plastic type 1) container with a plastic lid that has a sprinkle side and a pour side. The bottle was sealed with an official-looking hygienic seal-top which I appreciated.A little concerning though: inside the sealed container was a big fingerprint to which the powder stuck to - like something out of a "powdering for fingerprints" detective movie. Especially since the fingerprint goes quite deep into the bottle, this made me feel like the product isn't quite as hygienic as I'd like it to be and put me off using it I'm afraid.Other than that, the powder itself seems fine. The product is made in China I believe in case you like to know this kind of information.
