Q: What is the difference between this and the control grip immersion blender? I'm trying to decide which one to purchase.

This is am immersion blender that (like many) comes apart to clean in addition it has the other attachments such as the whisk. The cool part is that you attach the control handle to the chopper to use it that way. I love it because it is so much easier than than my cuisinart. Besides the control handle has 11 speeds. Highly recommend it. Deborah

Of course the BSB530XL is 280 watts and it has been perfect for everything I've made through it without struggling. I would say the toughest job I give my Breville is making smoothies with store bought ice cubes. It doesn't even wince as a cube hits the blades of the immersion wand, the motor spins at the same RPM's whether it is chewing up mango's or ice cubes which is a good sign.The toughest job I ever threw at a food processor was kneading bread dough. My old Cusinart 1/2HP full size food processor used to struggle kneading the dough, you could actually hear the motor loading up and struggling when a large clump of dough got caught in the blades. My lesson learned is bread dough is best made in stand mixer, not a food processor even though the manufacturer says you can. So to answer your original question, I cannot imagine how an additional 500 watts could be useful. I know that the Tony is significantly less costly than the Breville, but I went with the Breville because everything they make is typically well thought out and made.

Q: The demo and review videos on YouTube for the BSB530XL show a "quad" S-blade for chopping, but this photo looks like a standand S-blade?

Ours is a standard "S" blade. I would think a quad would be a bit too much, over cluttering the bowl. This thing is awesome as is.

Q: Does it handle pie dough?

I use mine to make pasta dough so I would imagine it could handle pie dough.
