Tiki: Modern Tropical Cocktails

Unique ingredients and techniques to be learned here!!!
I've explored both Martin Cates's Smugglers Cove and Beachbum Berry's Remix and opted to check out this book next. This book will take your tiki mixology skills to a new level. There is a small section of the classics incase you don't know how to make a Mai Tai. Mainly you want to buy this book for hard to find ingredients to try, some common ingredients not listed in other publications listed above and also some very doable new techniques. I'm becoming a big fan of fat washing and infusing spirits thanks to Shannon. The book is full of vibrant colorful illustrations too and has a handy bookmark ribbon to mark your favorite recipe. My only recommendation would be is: A lot of her recipes call for overproof spirits which seems to be a fad these days. I would tone this down and use a regular proof version because to me overproof spirits tend to have overpowering taste and tend to drown out the other flavors of the cocktail. Otherwise I'm extremely happy with this book.

A Fantastic Book on Tiki Cocktails
What a fantastic work!So many books on tiki focus solely on the traditional tiki cocktails, or slightly updated versions of them. The unfortunate truth is that many (but by no means all) of the "classics" are not necessarily great cocktails. They may have been great in concept, but in execution they were unbalanced and repetitious messes. The modern tiki revival has started to correct the sins of the past. Books such as Smuggler's Cove have brought the classics up to date in a more sophisticated way, while digging into a lot of the history. "Tiki", by Shannon Mustipher, takes it to another level with balanced versions of the classics, and many many original modern tiki cocktails presented in an informative and sophisticated fashion.I'll have to take exception to the reviewers who say that only a few of the cocktails are approachable, or even feasible given the range of ingredients required. True, this isn't a book on making gin and tonic, or bourbon on the rocks. A range of syrups, bitters, rums, and other spirits are necessary for most of the cocktails in this book. But that's a characteristic of tiki. Anyone familiar with tiki cocktails, and used to making them, will have most of what's called out. Or they will be adventurous enough to make them.If you are looking to expand your range, or refine the recipes that you are already using, this book is for you. HIGHLY recommended.

Original Tiki Recipes!
This book of ORIGINAL Tiki recipes is a great and necessary addition to any home bar [book] collection. The photographs are beautiful and the drinks are approachable. Great touch with the author giving recommended spirits for each recipe. There are a few recipes that have some spirits that you may not have on hand. However, that's why you buy bar books, right? Because you want to explore new spirits and try new recipes-Tiki provides that outlet! As a spirits collector, home bar enthusiast and reformed cocktail blogger (@foodietails *wink wink*) I can't wait to start making some of these drinks for myself and friends! The book is full of great information but not overstated like some. i.e-"this is a cocktail shaker", "put ice here", "whip like this", "this is a jigger" -_- This is a fun book and I highly recommend it. It's also a plus to support a black woman author who's killing the cocktail game!!!!Can't wait for the next book!

A delight for the senses!
Eloquent and deliciously descriptive, this tome to tiki is a pleasure to read and a delight to create from. Tiki drinks can overwhelm with their ingredient lists, but Mustipher makes it approachable for the beginner, with succinct, 4-ingredient foundation drinks that quickly pull you into exploring some of her fabulous tasty tinctures (toasted banana chip-infused bourbon! Coconut oil-washed shochu!). I've been making my way through the recipes in a way I haven't before with other cocktail books. The photography is lush and inspirational, encouraging me to spend time to create not only a delicious drink, but a treat for the eyes. The small size and smooth cover invite me to pick it up and leaf through everytime I pass my bar (I leave it out as decoration). One of the best cookbooks I've bought in awhile.

Nice book
Nice book with good recipes. But what I really wanted was something with a more Polynesian bent.

An Instant Classic!
This book is a wonderful addition to my cocktail bars library. Shannon Mustipher pulled out all the stops in all aspects for this project. From the design, to the photography, the broad experience levels this serves, and most importantly the cocktails....it is amazing! I knew once I was able to get into reading it I wouldn't stop and that is exactly what happened. Read it cover to cover in one sitting. Great recipes, clear layout of syrups/garnishes, and fantastic breakdown of barware and equipment. If you've had the pleasure of meeting Shannon you know very well that she is herself a well of information. She does not shy away from educating. She will break down whatever the subject matter is at hand until you fully understand. This amazing quality shined bright in this book. From home bartenders to high end cocktail bar and everything in between 'Tiki: Modern Tropical Cocktails' is a must own!

TIKI TIME!
A fun little book to add to your collection. Every drink I’ve made from it has been a winner. I love all the washed spirit cocktails and have even been introduced to a new juice ala Soursop. The only negative I have to say is that sometimes the reference pages are off, or there is something missing from the index. But even with that I’d still buy and recommend this book!
