Zenith Zoysia Grass Seed (2 Lb.) 100% Pure Seed Grown by Patten Seed Company

I was looking for a lawn that was low maintenance and could also grow in salty coastal regions for my second home. These seeds work and the turf it produces is very nice and soft. I love that it continuously spreads out and fills in other areas. I successfully grew the Zoysia in both Northern Virginia (near DC) and coastal central Virginia (Northern Neck) ranging from loamy, very hard, and sandy soil.The seeds may seem difficult to germinate but with some tips from my own failures and successes, you will find it is not so hard. Besides following the instructions provided by the manufacturer, these are things I highly recommend and found needed. I have also included pictures of the growing process to help you identify what Zoysia looks like.-For the regions I planted in, you can start planting in June and July. Try to kill all grass and weeds a couple of weeks before so you do not have to deal with a bunch of weeds and grass trying to grow back (use Roundup or glyphosophate).-Clearing and tilling the ground will promote a LOT of weeds to grow so I recommend these post-emergent weed killers that are Zoysia safe. 2-4D w/ Trimec (for most common weeds), Quinclorac (crabgrass), and SedgeEnder (if you have nutsedge). I have applied these at seeding and after germination with no ill effect.-Test your soil and use some starter lawn fertilizer to help the grass grow quicker. Fertilize again in about four weeks after planting with regular lawn fertilizer; this will help the grass grow much quicker.If your soil is really sandy or hard, I recommend adding some topsoil.-Use straw for slopes to prevent the seeds from washing away; use enough so that you can still see the soil below. Otherwise for flat land, rake or lightly spread some top soil over the seeds. Just make sure you pack it down with a lawn roller which will help keep the seeds in place. I have found that the seeds do not really need to be completely submerged into the soil if you water often and keep it moist.-I watered with water timers and sprinklers. This is one of the MOST important aspects of successfully germinating the seeds. DO NOT use sprinklers or hose nozzles that have very course droplets. Originally, I used impact sprinklers (tried 4 different brands) and had almost a 100% failure to germinate. The course water and side shooting nature of impacts causes the seeds to either sink into the soil or get washed away. I recommend sprinklers that simulate light rain (continuous spray, spinning or gear drive sprinklers).Because you are planting in the summer, on very hot days, you may need to water four to six times for about 4-5 minutes depending on your sprinklers. If the seeds dry out, they will die. Remember, you only need to keep the very surface (half to one-inch depth) moist in order to germinate. Watering too much will either drive the seeds deeper into the soil or wash them away.-If you successfully germinated the seeds, you will begin seeing them in about two to three weeks. Some will continue to germinate for up to four weeks so keep up with the watering! They grow super slow compared to other grasses and weeds so be diligent in removing the weeds. You do not have to be surgical in their removal; just make sure that they do not cover the seedlings.If you do not wish to use chemicals to constantly kill the weeds or manually removing them, use a reel mower to keep everything at 1.5 inches. You may even cut shorter if your zoysia has not reached that height. Keeping the area at 1.5 inches will allow the zoysia to grow and helps promote lateral growth later on. Crabgrass and clovers will most likely be the weeds you face.-Once four weeks has passed. You can water the grass as needed. I normally water every 3-4 days for about 30 minutes per area unless it rains. Water deep so the grass will have deeper roots! You will know if the grass needs water because the leaves will curl and look spiky instead of normally looking like blades.-After about 8 weeks, the grass should be really hardy and not require much maintenance. The grass will start shooting out rhizomes and filling in areas. Keep watering as needed.Hopefully with some of these tips, you can successfully grow your lawn too. So I get how people write the negative reviews. They are people who have not done their homework nor understand the work required. First, I have bought this product several times for a couple different homes. It is the envy of every neighbor. The neighbors were so jealous that tbey would throw trash in my yard and purposefully send their dogs in my yard to urinate. Lk. One neighbor even purposefully grew his entire front yard with the weed Dallas grass which is a nightmare to neighbors trying to grow this grass. This is the most gorgeous plush green with fine leaves that you ever see in a grass. The other Zoysias like Amazoy cannot compare. The neighbor who I grew to despise and the reason I moved, would let his yard get so long the Dallas grass seeds would blow over. Once my yard established it kicked that Dallas grass to the curb.It ate the Dallas grass for lunch. Know Dallas grass has one foot deep roots and is virtually unstoppable when it spreads. I had to be persistent spending hours in 100 degree heat pulling out Dallas grass by hand making mounds of weed piles on my driveway. This was because Zoysia is so darn slow to grow and takes 7 months before you see a hint of anything. When it starts to come up it is magnificent and exciting to see. Well worth the wait. The bare spots from where the Dallas grass was you ask? Use Pennington Annual Rye grass to fill the spots in tbe cooler weather and for the dog urination areas. The neighbors get so annoyed that there hatefulness didn't work. The annual rye dyes when it gets hot and the Zenith takes over and spreads from underground. Remember that all you have to do is get it started in some areas and be willing to wait. It is highly intelligent and will win if you let it. I even mixed bermuda in too and said may the beat grass win! The bermuda was faster in spreading but has ugly creepers/ runners.The zoysia won even though it is slower - it is like the turtle in the turtle and the hare. I didn't have the money to go the mile that the other reviewer wrote but he is correct in his procedure but it takes so much work. This is the lazy way but you have to have a couple years to wait if you just throw it down. I would scalp your lawn as short as you can mowing it yourself on the lowest setting bagging the yard waste then throw it down. I started in June with throwing it down and in December now I see the gorgeous Zoysia establishing patches in the front yard at my new house. The Bermuda is all white. I just sprayed the weeds in the yard today December 11th in Charlotte, NC. I know come summer the Zoysia will be ready to rock and roll and spread more once the warm season hits again. I am willing to wait. Will fertlize the heck out of it in March and April. But not too much as not going to burn it. They make special liquid fertilizer just for Zoysia as it is particular. This grass never needs maintenance or chemicals and will be green 3/4 of the year and if you want green grass in winter just throw down Pennington Annual Rye grass every winter!

This seed works, but you have to keep it moist. It grows slow. So stay with it. I watered it with some new soil I put down twice a day and it filled in a patch of my lawn that was completely dead. I will have to do it one more time to get the patches I missed. But it works, the seed was very good.

First, I think the price is high but that is not the (central) reason for my low rating. No, rather it is the mixture of sedge with the zoysia.I have two contiguous plots, in each I planted plugs, but about a month apart. On one, I decided to over-seed and bought this product through Amazon. After it germinated, and again this was on only one of the plots, the sedge started to appear. I contacted the supplier and they stated that heir product is independently evaluated.They suggested that there is a chemical sedge killer which I tried, and it generally works, but you need repeat applications. Their alternative suggestion was to let the zoysia grow and crowd out the sedge. Unfortunately, at least on my lawn, it’s the other way around. The sedge has a very dense root system and the zoysia has a difficult time maneuvering through it. That led me to a third solution, which was mine not theirs, and that was (and is) to did up the clumps.And just to be clear, the supplier of the plugs was the same vendor, the only variable was that one plot was over-seeded, the other was and is growing on its own, and without sedge.I’ll take their word for the outside testing and chalk this up to poor quality control. But, all in, all, my assessment is avoid. If it had been a five percent problem, it would not have been an issue.
