I gave this to my father for his 80th birthday. Some of the candy seemed way too new for a vintage 1941 era box, but both he and my mom LOVED IT and dived into it. They didn't eat it, they just looked through the whole thing and talked about the wax lips, the bubblegum, the stick candy, etc. Lots of laughs! I was SO SURPRISED to learn that it wasn't just a top layer of actual candy and then "filler" packaging, like so many gift boxes. The entire thing was packed side to side and top to bottom with a vast array of candy.Then the next day at the actual party, where this box was intended to be a party prop and a conversation piece, THE GRANDCHILDREN FOUND THE BOX. I (as their aunt), asked them politely to please not eat the whole box, and to wait until the party was over to devour the box. But being as there were 9 of them between the ages of 14 - 21, the box was quickly depleted! They LOVED IT, and my parents loved seeing the kids go crazy over it. It was like a no-fuss pinata had been opened for them and they were scrambling and laughing. The box of candy cigarettes! The bubble gum cigar! They had a fun time with it all. Great value, great party prop, great variety, great fun.

Though I think this could have been ten dollars cheaper, the jokes on me because I bought it, with no regrets. It's a rather small box, but it's crammed with every type of old candy you can remember. I bought it for my mom's 80th bday party where there'd be a ton of kids for a reason. It wasn't her only present, but a great distraction for sure. My mother enjoyed the paper about her birth year that was inside. It's a great gift.

So I got this for my mother for Christmas, she would’ve been 5 in 1940. We were so excited for her to open it, only to be a little confused. Of course we knew the candy would not actually be from 1940 but we thought the packaging, the things she would have remembered would have been in there and sadly it was just candy I could’ve easily put together myself. So the overall idea is great and don’t get me wrong, there was candy she definitely remembered from her childhood in this box. However I think it should be made a little more clear that it’s not packaged that way. And maybe I’m just dumb to have thought it would be. She loved the box and we had fun!

I have to say, my step dad didn't appreciate this as much as my wife, my sister, and I did, but this was a fun gift to give. And it was awesome that he shared. The candy wasn't stale, and it was just as much fun digging through the box to see all of the "old fashioned candy" you can no longer buy as it was to actually eat the candy. A great gift for the right person !!

I bought this for my grandfather's 80th birthday. He absolutely loved it! My grandma snatched it out of his hands before he even had a chance to look at it because she was so excited! As they pulled the candy out they had smiles from ear to ear saying, oh my gosh..do you remember these?!" The one and only thing I did not like was the amazon review card that was folded in the 1939 newspaper inside of the box. Because this was a gift I didn't open the box prior, so I had no idea it was in there. I would have preferred for them to place it on the outside of the gift inside the packaging.
