We use these bobby whistles for start/stop signals during archery events. The sound is the classic distinct two-tone chord. This kind of whistle takes more breath to blow than a modern whistle.The three I received were stamped as shown in the picture (Metropolitan Police London 1942). The whistles are metal, and not flimsy. The metal has the look of a mid-century manufactured product -- the edges aren't perfectly machined, so it looks more classic and hand-finished.If you're looking for a classic Metropolitan whistle, you'll be happy with this one. I bought two for gifts, and then bought another one for myself.

It actually arrived broken. A small metal plate inside was detached, and thus the whistle would only make a wind-like sound. Being in Canada, returning it would be more difficult than just living with it. I got a soldering iron and tried to fix it, but unfortunately, it just won't be fixed. In the one or two moments when it did work properly, it was very loud, with a beautifully defined two tone sound which I would like to desperately to have reliably. I'm almost tempted to buy one more, just to see if it's a one time thing.It's loud, seems to be durable (except for that broken plate, but that might just be a one-time issue), and it sounds fantastic (when I did get mine to actually work,) and if you're not worried about physical appearance, it's a very good whistle.

Today 7-OCT-2011, I received my bobby whistle today....just as Amazon had promised. I was expecting UPS but it came via USPS(no biggie, the fact that I got it when promised is all that matters to me).It Looks & sounds EXACTLY as I envisioned it would. To say that I am pleased with it, is a gross understatement. I have been wanting one for years, just never bought one till now. As for the company "A Bit Of Country, LTD." you did great!!! I can see me buying more of your stuff at a later date. TY Sirs/Mademoiselle. I will NOT be returning this whistle...I am THAT happy with it. :DI don't think I could be any happier than a hog in a Waller. :-)

This is a nice whistle. I just wish it weren't metal PLATED. A simple, SOLID brass would have been preferable, which is what it appears to be underneath the flaky chrome. The plating is coming off in places and it just looks ugly now. Oh well. The sound is great when blown hard. It is pretty loud (approx 95-105dB) and the dual tones beat evilly against each other.

I expected a solid brass, nickel plated whistle. (OK, for $15 I should have known better. And, I should have read the reviews BEFORE I ordered... the two reviews rated four stars seem more like two stars to me.) Regardless, this whistle is a dud. It's poorly made with rough edges. The chrome (?) plating is missing in several places. Yes, it makes a loud noise, but it's certainly not suitable as the gift I intended.Amazon accepted a return and refunded the purchase price.

I'm curious about the folks who posted complaints about supposedly limited volumes their versions of this product produced. Mine is quite recognizable as an alarm signal at a considerable distance. However, it does require some force behind the breath one uses to inspire its output. All that aside, I bought the thing as a British bobbie's costume accessory. By connecting it to a silver-colored chain I purchased at a crafts store, and dangling the accessory around my neck, it added a nice touch of credible authority to my Halloween pose. Good price, too.
