Music Box Movement 15 Note Make You Own Song with Tool Kit (with Bamboo Box)

This is something I've wanted to see for a long time and it has really triggered my imagination about what I can do with this. Accoustically, it isn't great because the bamboo box resonates on certain notes and the manner of how you hold the box affects the resonance. The crank was slightly bent, but it was easily corrected with a carefully placed force. The hole puncher for the music is certainly sharp enough to punch your own music into the cardboard tape provided.There are 15 notes on the strips. I counted them, and then forgot the number, but it was between 190-200 lines in which you can place chords or single notes. The crank can be whatever tempo you want it to be.The crazy idea I thought of doing with this is to carefully crank the handle to a rhythm, record the audio and speed, slow the playback to give me two more octaves and digitally blend the three tracks into a recording of a music box with three times as many notes. I'm no musician, but I think that should be possible.I went a bit overkill by recording the music, performing FFT and determined that it is way out of tune, but that's okay. It sounds nice and most people won't notice that.My first project will be Satie's Gymnopedies because I've never heard that on a music box.

The media could not be loaded. This is only tuned to the Ab major scale. This means you have limited notes to use this thing, but it can still be very satisfying to write a piece for the music box especially if you modulate between the major scale and the minor counterpart. You can still get creative and write some pretty sounding music on it. I made an original piece myself. It also has some pre-made stuff. You just need to punch out the blackened dots. It can make for a very sentimental gift, plus there are plenty of blank stuff so you can keep writing music for different occasions.

I'm glad it comes in a box instead of out on it's own because it was for a gift. The actual mechanical portion stopped functioning after playing it around 10-15 times while I was figuring out the music and placements of the holes. I had to replace that with another one. The paper does feed into the box well and it sounds good. It definitely requires an ear for music if you're going to try to figure out a song. It was fun to figure out.

I’ve been having fun with this! While the 15 note rather than 30 does have limits (no ‘black keys’ from the piano) this has been a great introduction to music boxes and how to set the music onto paper. A good value for anyone looking to dip their toes into music boxes:-) Note: not all of the paper is perfectly centered (sometimes one margin is bigger than another) which just means you need to be mindful sometimes about how you load it into the mechanism. The gear stripped out, so it’s unusable. :(

I had to take it apart and do quite a bit of tweaking to get it working right. It's a sensitive mechanism and needs careful alignment or it'll miss notes or play the wrong ones. That said, I did get it working great, and it is a good value. The blank sheets are a nice tough, and my daughter can have some fun transcribing some of her own music.

I really loved this as I bought it for an anniversary gift. I created a custom ribbon and It played great the first time, after that the crank would not pull the ribbon through :( so now I am scrambling for a different gift. I asked a question on the sight about metal gears for a 30-note box and if they would work on a 15 note box but received no reply.
