The perfect tool
Super sturdy wire, took it out to Western Virginia on a trout fishing trip. Worked amazing, I ended up just stabbing the fish in the head with a knife so didn't need to be a pick tool to do so. Then it's just standard operating procedure:Bleed the gillsClean the belly outExplode the spine from the tail endRun the wire up the spine to the head* the nerve area is just above the spine, if done properly the fish will convuls while the wire goes up the spine*Love how portable it is too, will def use on all my fishing adventures as ikejime gives a much fresher quality fish to eat.Zero fishy smell, not even in the cooler!

We’ll Made
I haven’t used this yet but it’s very well made. I’m sure it will do the trick. I plan to couple it with the “Xtrada IKEJIME Pocket Ike Jime,” which is built for smaller fish. This one can extend the length of the other.

Improves the flavor of the fish you catch
The June 2023 issue of "In-Fisherman" magazine (pages 6 and 7) has an article about using the Japanese method of Ike Jime to improve the quality of the fish you keep. There are three benefits to using Ike Jime.1. It is a humane way to quickly dispatch the fish rather than having them suffer for hours.2. It greatly improves the flavor of the fish you will be eating if you want to eat it immediately.3. It allows one to age the fish and improve its flavor. There are many YouTube videos on how to use this item. A four step process is recommended.1. Kill the fish with a spike or a club.2. Bleed the fish by cutting the gills.3. Run the Ike Jime wire inside the fish's backbone from the head to the tail.4. Place the fish in an ice water slurry.I was not sure about running the wire inside the backbone -- it seemed complicated, but actually was quite simple. I used this wire on a two pound walleye, and it was the best tasting walleye I have ever eaten.BTW – I cooked this fish using the “Poor Man’s Lobster” recipes from YouTube videos by Kent Rollins and Shotgun Red. It was delicious, and I’d recommend checking out those videos for an easy way to prepare fish. A great thing about this method is you boil them in water with sugar, salt, and lemon juice. Healthier, easier to clean up, and does not stink up the house unlike frying fish.

Best ikejime wire this is SMALL size
These may be a little expensive vs some (xtrada) or diy (don't listen to the piano/guitar wire people advising your diy attempts you will be sorry)These hookook Nitonol wires are DEFINITELY worth it.I Have owned xtrada and seen but not used aftco and miscellaneous others. To be fair while I do have extensive experiece with ikejime; these I've only played with them at this point and not used. I haven't been fishing in a bit but I am gearing up for a lot of fishing and catch and cook.Vs DIY...People say just get some piano wire or guitar wire. If you are in saltwater just dont do this and in freshwater i wouldnt unless you are just a curious type to try ikejime before investing. And can get an ice pick as spikeYou can purchase Nitonol Titanium wire and rig a diy yourself... you're only saving about 1/2 price on just the wire plus you would want some crimping and probably shrink wrapping and some sort of handle.... just not worth it imho.Vs XtradaI have used the Xtrada ikejime tools and yes they may be cheaper for the spike and wire but they have glaring problems.Had a couple - mid and large sizes. The hollow shaft is not as effective as using a larger diameter spike and it's also not as destructive to the brain (very, very important if you care about the point of buying ikejime products - being humane to fish and best meat quality)On my Xtrada The plastic handle broke on both the brain spikes and the shaft of smaller one bent... so threw out and the other was lost/stolenThe stainless Xtrada wires don't have good termination end on them and they are much less ridged (very bad for running through fish,) are relatively easy to kink/deform and aren't as manageable and corrosion resistant as are these Hookook Titanium memory alloy wires.VS AftcoAftco is priced higher and I don't think anywhere near as nice. Brain spike for some of aftco (the blue handle) are cheaper than the hookook wooden but it's basically an icepick. I purchased an ice pick before getting the Hookook wood handled brain spike and both are decent but I'll probably always bring the hookook with me and always the wire.

It's an ongoing endeavor learning to use this tool effectively.
I can see that this is very useful tool after landing large energetic fish, and possibly a more humane method of subduing game fish no matter the size.
